Anyone had a Candida lusitaniae fungal infection in hip replacement?
I have a Candida lusitaniae infection in my hip replacement that spread thru my muscles for 5 years now just got diagnosed this Jan and drained 275 ml off my illiac muscle however when they drained it it went systemic into all my organs and brain almost killed me .after 8 months of high dose anti fungal it burst inside me and I hemmoredged ,in the middle of 2 stage revision concrete spacer ,none of the 9 doctors if been thru ever seen this and I can't find anything on the internet.anyone else have or had this infection,?

Hi @bigrob, this must be very frightening. You said that you've seen 9 doctors. Were they infectious disease specialists at a major medical center? Is the infection still not under control? Are you still taking an anti-fungal?

1 ReactionIam at Baylor in Dallas and I have a cancer turn or ortho specialist 2 of the dr were infectious disease ,the cultures don’t grow anything now they took copious amount of fluid off the hip when they opened me however with it spreading so far thru my muscles it feels my hip and illiacpsoas have filled up again from Iam guessing it pooling back down also this infection seeds or something so I dunno

I have bilateral hip replacements since i am 25 years old (47 now)
A year and a half ago I woke up with a big lump at the back of my leg. Doctor made X rays and found a hole in my bone 🙁
According with my doctor this looks like an infection but after 2 biopsies and scans the doctor cant grow anything, he cant find the infection.
Has anybody been in a situation like that?
My doctor said that he may have to remove the whole thing, etc
I just don't know if i want to do this big procedure if the doctor is not 100% sure that i have an infection, even thought everything points out to that diagnostic but with no evidence of the bug!
I Hope someone is there to give me advise.

When you say he may have to remove the whole thing, do you mean your leg? Have you sought out a second opinion?

And removing the whole thing. I meant the protesis that is cemented in my femur not only the asetabulum. And he said that he will brake the bone and repair it since the protesis is not lose.

If it's not an infection, what? I'm sure you were checked for bone cancer.
Did you have a blood test before surgery to check for allergies to the implant components? Medicare pays over for the $10,000.00 of dollars for the implant surgery but not for the $600.00 blood test for the metals and bone cement. Who make up rules like this? If you are allergic you must have the implant removed because not only will it raise inflamation in the implant area, but raise the histamines thoughout your body thus raising inflamation leading to other diseases like eczema and various other auto immune diseases.
Talk to your orthopedic surgeon and an allergist about this idea as being a cause.
If the ortho disputes metal allergies I will gladly send you a copy of my blood report from a lab in IL which identified my metal allergies and rated each based on teh severity, 2 were moderate and 3 were mild. I was not allergic to titanium, but my ortho said even titanium is not pure, it has traces of these others metals in them and thus I would have an allergic reaction.
