Hypothyroid: when do you take your medication?

Posted by hajeera @hajeera, Jan 16, 2022

I have my thyroid medication(for hypothyroidism) at 5 AM and my breakfast at 10 AM. Is it okay to have a 5-hour gap in between?

Hi @hajeera and welcome to mayo Clinic Connect.
Here is what Mayo Clinic says about taking the medication: "How do you take levothyroxine Mayo Clinic? It may take several weeks before you start to notice that your symptoms are better. It is best to take this medicine on an empty stomach. Take it with a full glass of water at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before eating breakfast. Swallow the capsule whole." --- Levothyroxine (Oral Route): https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs/levothyroxine-oral/drg-20072133

Is there a certain reason you have a 5 hour gap?

I take mine w a 3:00 am daily alarm. Before and after food! I’ve done it for over a year now and I’m not even phased anymore w this alarm. It’s habit and I never forget my meds!

Been on Levothyroxine / Synthroid for 50 years, various dosage. I take mine as soon as I wake up on empty stomach. Have breakfast 1-2 hours later. Dr told me once it is important to be consistent.

Make sure you are not taking a multi-vit, iron supplement or calcium at same time, at least 4 hours before or after.

This web page from makers of synthroid has advice on how to take:

I use to take in morning but I seriously need my coffee so switched to bedtime. I stop eating/drinking by 7/8 so I have that 2/3 hour window.

What has been successful for me: Take Levothyroxine for Thyroid First thing in your mouth upon awakening every morning with glass of water… wait 30 minutes before eating or taking any additional meds. 🙂

New studies are showing that it is fine to take thyroid meds at bedtime. In fact, some are showing a slight improvement in numbers taking them at bedtime versus morning. Glad it’s working for you.
