Help with constipation and CKD: Anything I can safely take?

Posted by csage1010 (Sue) @csage1010, Sep 13, 2021

Hi all, I am Stage 3a CKD (newly diagnosed) and the dietary changes I have had to make are exacerbating my chronic constipation, I don't get to see the nephrologist until December. Is there anything I can safely take or eat that might help? Thank you.

Didn't the veg and fruit raise your potassium? Mine did and I struggled all my CKD life with elevated potassium

@nimalw I watch my intakes carefully. For me, that is no potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, oranges, grapefruit, etc. I have looked up low potassium fruit and vegetable lists from sources like National Kidney Foundation or American Kidney, and WebMD to get an idea of how to eat my way to steady potassium levels. Of course, each person is different, but perhaps looking at the lists will help?

I sure do miss oranges and bananas. Given my nature, it is easier to just not eat them, rather than "treat" myself once in a while!

I take a couple of tablespoons of ground flax seed daily and that seems to work well for me
