Since I am 80, I seem to have "everything" wrong. Just kidding. My hip was hurting so much for about 4 months and doctors kept guessing as to the cause. Finally after many starts and stops of treatment, one doctor said he thinks it is sacroiliitis, and he gave me an injection of some steroid right into the sacroiliac. Pain is gone, at least for the present.

-itis is inflammation and it may come back. Get images and then a referral to PT. There are great exercises to relieve the hip pain, which is worse when that muscle, hamstrings and when there is loss of strength. Check out Piriformis Syndrome: Dr Jo and Bob & Brad on youtube have good stretches; webmd is good for understanding.
