Anytime I've had a surgery, the surgeon and their team has always discussed the risks with me including the anesthesiologist. I'm not sure if the surgeon would know right away there was a problem without feedback from the patient...but then I don't have any medical training or background so this is just my thoughts.

This happened to me during a retina tear surgery. I informed the doctor on follow-up that I now had a blind spot in my vision. He just said hopefully it goes away. Well it didn't it became larger so I went to a different doctor who tells me its a macular hole, and I can now look forward to weeks of remaining face down following that surgery and cataracts after that.
