How do you cope with Stiffness?

Posted by bevrust @bevrust, Dec 21, 2021

I can only walk or clean house for about 20 to 30 minutes and then I start getting stiff. Maybe it’s imflamation, I don’t know the reason. I have gained so much weight because I can’t even go for a walk. Does anyone have this problem and how do you cope with it.

I bought my husband a Cubii, Jr. It is a compact seated exercise elliptical. It works really well for his stiffness while not working so hard on his joints.

HELLO @bevrust and welcome to Mayo Connect. Your muscle soreness sounds like its a real problem for you. I found this information from the Arthritis foundation that may help you. It talks about why we get sore muscles and what we can do about it.

Have you spoken to your doctor about this? He/she can rule out any problems and maybe help you find a good exercise program.
And I’m just wondering about how you found Mayo Clinic Connect. Let’s stay in touch!

I found a group for virtual walking that’s helprf many people. I’ll ask @ess77 and @artist01 to join us and tell you about the group.
Can you check with your doctor about your stiffness and, if all is OK, then join us! Let me know what the doctor says!

Thank you….My Dr. says it is my fibromyalgia. I have Lupus also. I just had both knees replaced this year. I was stiff before surgery and I still am after a while of walking.

@bevrust So stiffness is not a new issue, but a very bothersome issue. Have you talked to your doctor about physical therapy to help loosen your muscles? Having had both knees replaced, you certainly don’t want the muscles around them to stiffen! Please call your doctor.
Will you be able to drive to therapy of do you have someone who can help you? Please let me know!

It helps me at to keep moving in spite of stiffness. I used aqua therapy which helps you move better than land based therapy. Gradually, I was able to move more freely over a time. Start and keep at it regardless of how stiff youfeel. Things take time but patience does pay off.

I work mine out very cautiously and careful to not pull any muscle or set of muscles too hard. It takes me about thirty minutes to smooth out walking...much longer to smooth out my progress using a walking cane.

I have found supplementing with the B-3 vitamin variant nicotinamide riboside (aka: Niagen) has given me complete relief from stiffness. It took me almost 2 months to notice the benefits while taking 300 mg per day. I was 67 when I started taking it, and am now 71. Currently I take a bit more than 1000 mg per day. Previously, I was stiff in the mornings and after sitting too long. That is no longer the case. It makes me feel younger in that way. Friends who take it report the same thing. See AboutNAD.com. Also search "nicotinamide riboside" at clinicaltrials.gov. There is a great deal more about it elsewhere on-line. It is very anti-inflammatory, and has other benefits.
