Worsening pain in my knees

Posted by ashpen @ashpen, Dec 5, 2021

I'm finishing up 6 weeks of physical therapy and I'm going to see my orthopedic physician on the 15th. I brushed off being in worse pain for the first few weeks. It still feels like the pain in my knees is getting worse and now I am popping more than before. As well as falling more due to my knees giving out. What should I do? Should I tell my pt or should I wait and tell my orthopedic physician?

@jenatsky

Your PT sounds correct about ehlers danlos and your PCP should refer you for genetic testing plus an exam for this.

My PT can't refer me only my orthopedic physician can that's why this next appointment is important. I have to explain to my orthopedic physician that I fell more.

Finally went after having to reschedule and I feel like for nothing he told me he doesn't know and doesn't want to mess with it no more and referred me to his coworker who specializes in knees. He did say he thinks a mri or CT scan should be done.

@ashpen You are one step closer in the right direction, that's good. As frustrating as it is to go through the steps of doctor to specialist, it is necessary to rule out causes. Having an MRI will help analyze if anything suspicious is going on in your knee so you can progress in the right direction to hopefully preventing your falls.

How have you been doing since we last spoke? Any more falls?

Alright I guess knees have been shakey. Pain still, no falls though so I guess it's progress.

@ashpen I'm happy to hear about no falls. My fingers are crossed you will get in soon with the specialist referral by your doctor.

How are you presently handling and managing the pain?

Honestly haven't done much, so the only pain is when my knee cap jumps. So I am fine in that field.

Went to knee specialist and she retook the x-rays in a different angle. She Analyzed me walking and standing, asked me about the knee brace. I didn't have to explain alot because the physician assistant was the same as my orthopedic physicians. She said for two months we will try plan a if it don't work we will investigate further and that she just wants a few days of no pain. She said I got the triple threat in genetics "my knees and feet point out - who cares", "my joints are lose - strengthen muscles", " my muscles are tight - stretch", and "nutrition change more vitamin d and protein." She said my knee cap is at a angle instead of aligned going up and down.

Vitamin d3, women's multivitamin, total or more 50mcg Vitamin d, protein intake increase, hamstring stretches 4-5 days a week, 3-4 a week strength exercise, flipped my patellar knee brace to push knee cap to the inner side.

Tomorrow is 2 month check in with my doctor and I don't know what she will say when I tell her it was getting better and then go really badly worse.
