Food while at Mayo Clinic: Are there options for dietary restrictions?

Posted by cthompson @cthompson, Dec 11, 2018

I have an appointment in Minnesota. I'll be flying in from Texas. I am on a very restricted diet, due to massive pain that ensues when I eat much else. Basically, what I can eat now is chicken, potatoes and rice. I don't think I'll be able to bring food, as I'm flying but does the clinic have food for people with strict dietary restrictions? I'm unsure of how to get myself fed while I'm there that week. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you members for sharing your great suggestions. I think that the patients, themselves, are one of the best sources of practical information!
I think that you will find that the people in Rochester are very aware and supportive of the medical needs of the patients who spend time in the area. So you just have to mention your dietary needs.

I want to add an additional resource to this conversation: An update on the free Concierge Service at Mayo Clinic. Formally concierge services were largely limited to the Rochester campus. now visitors to any of the 3 Mayo campuses can get help with initial travel questions .The concierge service has recently added Live Chat. Now you can chat with a live person about preliminary travel questions.
Here is the link to the live chat service in the online Visitor's Guide - https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide

I send you my thoughts as you embark on your journey.

Hi Rosemary. What sort of cost does a consultation charge ? For kidney patients. And for blood works . Rough figure to your knowledge. Tks

I am staying at the Hilton Homewood Suites which offers breakfast, shuttle M-F, and it is close to the St Mary’s location. The suite has a kitchen with a full sized refrigerator, stovetop, microwave, dishwasher, and cooking utensils. I will be here for 12 days so I ordered groceries delivered through the Walmart app and they were delivered to my door. There is also a small grocery store a block away. I am on the third floor and it is very quiet. The furniture is a little dated so I drape sheets over it. The staff is very helpful.

Hilton Garden Inn

I’m going to say very limited options. I’m gluten free and have numerous allergies. They refused to modify their foods for something safe for me to eat so I brought my own.

No I didn't ask. It was a snack bar in the subway level by the auditorium in Rochester
