Peripheral nerve stimulators

Posted by sparshall @sparshall, Jan 14, 2020

This is a long shot, but I’m looking for people who have used implanted peripheral nerve stimulators (PNS) to control nerve pain. They block the pain signal to the brain. Stimrouter and Stimwave are major brands. These are NOT the same thing as spinal cord stimulators, of which there are many brands. I’m about to have a Stimwave implanted to block intractable pelvic and leg nerve pain.

@sprinrosa64 I see you are interested in hearing from others who may have experience with a STEMWARE PNS. You will notice that I have moved your post into the existing PNS discussion, where I know you've already posted previously, to share your update and to better allow for others with experience to connect with you on this topic.

While we wait for others with experience to join, can I ask what your doctor shared with you about the timeline for results might look like?

Thanks, the doctor and stemwave company both figure that a week to 10 days should show if it will work for me. Its been 5 days and I see no difference in pain level

I look forward to hearing from others who have personal experiences with PNSs and how long it has taken to notice a reduction in pain.

@sprinrosa64 if you plan to see through the full ten days, will you please come back and share an update?

@spinrosa64 I'm behind on this conversation. Would you mind telling me what brand is your device, and where on your body have they placed the stimulators?

It’s Stemwave PNS They had wanted to put it in my quad but were unable to so I have 2 of them below my knee. Today is 6th day and I am miserable. I would say how happy I am with the stemwave company they have come to my house twice to reprogram. We are giving it 2 more days before making a decision

i haven't seen any comments on this forum about the Sprint PNS, which is supposed to only require the implant for 60 days. Anyone have experience with that? Thanks.

I found no relief from Stemwave PNS. In fact I was glad trial was over

Hi There,

I do have a peripheral nerve stimulator from Stimwave to deal with chronic pelvic and groin pain.
Interesting to know if you went ahead with Stimwave and what your experience has been like?

UPDATE: The Nalu device I had caused many problems, including shocks and pain around the IPG, and it never worked properly. I had it removed, and on June 10 I had a Stimwave implanted by a different doctor. The Stimwave works perfectly and is giving me 100% pain relief in the targeted area. Medicare refused to pay for the original Nalu implant surgery or the device itself, but did cover an attempted revision and the removal. (I don't owe anything. Medicare protects patients from unapproved charges.) I was astonished to discover that Nalu put a whopping price of $59,444 on their simple device! Stimwave costs a fraction of that -- and actually works.

Wow , that’s quite a scary story , especially since I am probably going to trial one in a couple of months . Can you say which clinic you had it installed ..or even the city or state? It’s hard to get good outcome data , especially with quality of life as the outcome , not the pain score etc. Are there any good Nalu PNS stories out there that I can be encouraged by ?
