Use of Prednisone and Improvements in Bone Density

Posted by Teri @tsc, Aug 24, 2021

I'm wondering if anyone who takes prednisone for chronic disease has had any success in improving or maintaining bone density by taking a prescribed drug, supplements, exercise, diet, the use of whole body vibration therapy, etc. If so, please say what has worked for you. Thank you!

@becsbuddy, I'm sorry that you can only manage a mile walk. Resistance training is good. I think I mentioned before to check out Carol Michaels on Youtube for some appropriate workouts. I did Pilates for 25 years+. Pain from the PMR made it impossible to do mat work, but now on Prednisone, I'm free of most pain. When I started researching appropriate exercises for Osteoporosis I was shocked to learn that many Pilates exercises - involving forward flexion of the spine (C curve) are dangerous for osteoporosis as they can cause silent compression fractures. The same is true for yoga. The National Osteoporosis Foundation has information about safe Pilates and Yoga. Also, Dr. Weill has a good article on osteoporosis and Pilates if you want to Google it. Best, tsc

Tramadol is a safe drug, take what you need to relieve pain. It is not an opioid. When it first came out they didn't know what to call it -- it's really in a class of its own. I took it for years for arthritis pain, and was easily able to stop taking it when I didn't need it. Don't fear addiction.

If you're taking calcium and magnesium and boron (you need all, together) you need to check that it's actually dissolving in your stomach, or it's just passing thru and no use. Put a tablet into a little glass of vinegar. Stir it from time to time. Does it dissolve completely?

In Japan, they treat osteoporosis with K2, in addition to the minerals.

I'm a nurse, retired now, but I had Hep C for years and learned to educate myself as thoroly as possible when I get any diagnosis. Don't assume someone else will do it for you, please.

@becsbuddy I was on prednisone from when I had my transplant in September 2016 until a few months ago. I sort of begged them to take me off of it and they reduced it and then took me off of it, adding in extra tests to make sure the effect was not bad.

I am really sort of upset though that when put on it I wasn't warned about the effects on bones so that I could have been proactive. I'm not sure if that's because Mass General makes it clear that they handle anything to do with the transplant and all else should be handled by your PCP or appropriate specialist so they figured my PCP would say something or what, but I plan to bring it up in the fall when I have an appointment.

Bottom line though is that my PCP dropped the ball completely so I ended up with advanced osteoporosis. I have changed PCPs now despite having a great rapport with my old one. I liked him a lot but I need to more than like him, I need to trust that he will pay better attention to what I need medically. The jury is still out on my new PCP, I've only seen her two times, once for the initial visit, and one other time.

I am 70, advanced Osteo, many broke and compressed back…. I am starting a vitamin/ mineral regime, I prayed for help been reading for 11 months… found this! Mira and Jayson Calton…. She at age 30 had edvanced Osteo and bones of 80 year old… had to sale great business and move where her family could take care of her…. She is now normal bones…. Look up fantastic! Makes total sense, put in your body what it needs and your body will do what it is supposed to do…. Heal and stay healthy… I have bought all I need and I am starting Monday. Much cheaper than algaecal and strontium that didn’t help me at all, got worse so quit after six months getting worse. Need all prayers I can get. I have almost lived in bed for 11 months, I have hope in God and giving my body what it needs to function…NATURALLY. NO DRUGS ! I have refused drugs making a unhappy dr, that never had an encouraging word, don’t think they know anything but drugs they just don’t have knowlegeand fuss at me and tell me how bad it is going to be….also will have

vitamin and mineral blood test to see what I need …. And a dr that cares for my health! Found one too. Thanks for prayers in advance. I will post after first three months…. Pray this will give hope and encourage a lot of us. Some hope and good reports are good. Caltons have 2 books that really opened my eyes and understanding with hope and facts. One on bones and one on macronutrients. “The Macronutrient MIRACLE” about losing weight and REVERSING DISEASE, 28days results… and the other one was on Bones, can’t remember the name but I bought both eye opening to a lot of Questions I couldn’t find answers to… hope this helps and brings healing and knowledge.

It's discouraging when Doctor A assumes Doctor B is providing all patient education. And it should never happen.

I now ask a LOT of questions of doctors, and pharmacists, prefacing my questions with, "Is there ANYthing else I need to know about this drug or procedure? ANYthing you've forgotten to mention?"

I don't want to trip over any predictable, belated Unintended Consequences or have any "Oops!" notes in my medical record. When we are not adequately informed, we can only give Uninformed Consent to doctors which is a violation of the most sacred tenet of the doctor-patient contract.

I don’t know the answer, I’m sorry. My Dr wanted me on the drugs but I studied the good and the side effects of them and decided to search for herbal and natural remedies. I tried algie cal with strontium…. Mistake. Read and researched strontium… quit but didn’t help and took both for six months, not better but got worse so stopped, prayed searched and found Mira Calton and if she reversed her advanced Osteo with bones of 80 year old woman’s bone and her doctor told her to move where her family could take care of her… no hope! then I can. She was only 30 when diagnosed…. It took her years like 2 but she is normal bones today. Look up Mira and Jayson Calton. I’m starting all the products she used ! With prayer of my church family and friends! My husband has heart trouble he is going to start this with me. One thing for sure I won’t be damaging my body nor health. They have books you can read and videos to help you understand. I ordered 2 books , REBUILD YOUR BONES , 12 week osteoporosis protocol. The other is, THE MICRONUTRIENT MIRACLE, 28 day plan to lose weight, increase your energy, and Reverse Disease. AMAZING!!!! You will understand vitamins and nutrients and how to take them to get FULL BENIFITS from them for you bones and body! All their products are third party tested and the omegas are tested EVERY TIME. They patented two products so couldn’t be changed. So I hope this helps you. It is so stressful and confusing the choice you need to make. I am very advanced Osteo, but there is HOPE. I’m going to give my body what it needs to do what God made it to do. It took years to get me here so I know it won’t be overnight but it will start immediately in the direction or reversing Osteo and nourishing my body and bones. Pray and hope this helps you.🙏🌺😄pray a prayer for me. Their products for three months is much cheaper and better than others I have tried… OsteoPro and AlgaeCalPlus with Strontium Booster. Wish I had found Mira and Jayson first I feel I’d be much better now instead of worse. Just type their names in… God bless all our journeys to success! We do Not have a disease! We actually haves body undernourished. It is reversible just like all others are.😁♥️

@tsc. Ive been taking prednisone for almost 4 years for an autoimmune disease. I started on really high doses and now I’m in the process of tapering. Currently on 8 mg. No one put 2+2 together so I wasn’t started on a bone “replacement” drug until it was too late. I’ve been taking Fosamax for about 3 years but nothing has improved. I am now working with my doctor to replace the prednisone with CellCept (Mycophenolate Mofetil). It works the same as prednisone without the horrible side effects. We shall see!
Are you taking prednisone? Can i ask what you’re taking it for and how much?

Hi @der, Thank you for your post. Could you write more about your experience with Algae Cal? It would be helpful. I guess it didn't help you. I haven't taken strontium, although I do consider it from time to time.

Hi @becsbuddy, in May 2021, I started on 40 mg of Prednisone for an autoimmune disorder, Giant Cell Arteritis. I did a gradual taper and stopped taking it a few weeks ago. My bone density test showing osteoporosis, was done a month later. I don't know if the prednisone caused my osteoporosis, but after taking it one month, I tend to doubt it. I had a number of other risk factors. I have been taking alendronate for a year. I would love to get off it, though I have no side effects. Hopefully Dr. Loren Fishman's yoga program, "12 Poses vs Osteoporosis" will improve my bone density. Now my husband who has Alzheimer's also has osteoporosis. He fractured his hip in January after falling over a box. It's challenging to get him to take the alendronate properly, plus do exercises in addition to walking. I wish you the best.
