Meralgia Paresthetica

Posted by steeldove @steeldove, Oct 12, 2020

Has anyone else in the group been diagnosed with meralgia paresthetica? Meralgia paresthetica is a condition characterized by tingling, numbness and burning pain in the outer part of your thigh. The condition is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which supplies sensation to your upper leg.Jan 16, 2020

Does Meralgia Paresthetica cause excruciating pain? my mom is suffering from thigh pain for 2 years and she is taking narcotic pain killers which doesn't even work, but she is experiencing excruciating pain. no doctors has officially diagnosed this and i am wondering if she has this condition. Any comment will help. Thank you so much.

Hi @jamie2021, Welcome to Connect. I'm sorry to hear your Mom has been suffering from the thigh pain for 2 years with no real help or diagnosis. It is sometimes scary to search for conditions that fit our symptoms on the Internet and since we are not doctors we have a tendency to think the worse. From what I've read there are multiple causes for thigh pain. Here's some more information that may be helpful and it shows Meralgia Paresthetica as a possible cause.

Have you thought about trying to get a second opinion or seeking help at a major teaching hospital or health facility like Mayo Clinic?

Thank you so much for your reply.
I haven't yet. My mom is currently living out the States and we have to bring her in.
Also i feel so lost to where to start the process. I live in California. UCLA, UCI would be the major hospital and there are over 20 doctors in Neurology. I don't know how to choose one...

I wonder if the doctors in Mayo Clinic can guide me to the right doctor who shares the same expertise and have done similar procedure to treat Meralgia Paresthetica.

Dr. Mathew Pingree is the doctor I would love to see at Mayo clinic. Is there a way i could reach him and ask if he has any recommended doctors in west coast?

The process of finding the right treatment is so hard...
Thank you again for your reply. I really appreciate it.

I think UCLA would be a good place to seek help for your mom. Both of these pages show Meralgia Paresthetica in their lists. I wasn't able to find any references for Meralgia Paresthetica and UCI.

Diagnoses - Peripheral Nerve: https://www.uclahealth.org/neurosurgery/diagnoses-peripheral-nerve
Meralgia Paresthetica: https://www.uclahealth.org/neurosurgery/meralgia-paresthetica

You might just want to give them a call and discuss your mom's symptoms and see if you can setup an appointment for her - https://www.uclahealth.org/neurosurgery/contact-us

Mayo Clinic Network does have a location in Southern California but I'm not sure if they have any services related to Meralgia Paresthetica or neurology. Here's a page that talks about Palomar Health. It might be worth calling them as I believe Mayo Clinic affiliates have access to Mayo Clinic resources and doctors for collaboration.

My primary care diagnosed me with meralgia paresthetica - at first it was extremely painful. I was told to make an appt with an orthopedic doctor since my xrays also showed hip arthritis. Because I was in so much pain and could not get an appt for weeks, I decided to try a chiropractor. Research on the web showed that neuro chiropractors were successful at treating this. I found one (specializes in treating nerve pain) and went last week. She used ultrasound and that night I had my first sleep without pain. Since then I have mild pain off and on, she said it would take a few visits. You definitely want to get a medical diagnosis of course, but its something to consider to help with the pain.

Hi Arizona anyone I need help. Ive done the thinking, unfortunately our medical personal in my area , like about 20 of them and supposedly qualified only seam to here what they all ready read up off of the last miss diagnosis. So mad and frustrating the last 4 months been. Anyway I degress sorry.

Here's how you make an easy 100 bucks tor donation on your behalf just lmk where and I will send confirmation it's done.
The ? Is this,
may vary just a bit depending on who asking so without further off track its this.

Do you know yourself about meralgia paresthetica or know of anyone (surgeons) that is familiar with procedures relating too MP meralgia paresthetica?
I feel crazy almost. I've seen neurologists that dont have a clue what a trapped pinched nerve ca n feels like. If your curious how I can be sure of this fact I'll happily share if ask

For some it can mild and then there's some that can take an ordinarly healthy mind body and spirit then turn your life into real life nightmarre but doesnt or in my case anyway not even 1 minute relief since showed up. You never wake up. I honestly never thought I would entertain some of the crazy thoughts that have crossed my mind more than once lately .
Please lmk ty gus.

Hi @goodairgus, I can see that you are desparate for answers. Hopefully members of the community who have experience with meralgia paresthetica can offer guidance and share what helped them. To help you connect with others like @steeldove @lotsofpain @ellenos and others, I moved your question about finding an experienced medical professional to this existing discussion.

I am from AZ - I don’t think I have your nerve problem but who knows as I have SFN all up and down my left side, thigh included. Where have you gone here? I don’t think anyone here is trying to make it harder, just protect you from unsavory people that inhabit the internet.
