Elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH): How is it treated?

Posted by ladybugmg @ladybugmg, Sep 27, 2018

After I had a nonfasting blood test yesterday my doctor tells me that I have elevated PTH. Is anyone else dealing with PTH and if so would appreciate learning about their experience and how it was treated or is untreatable. Thank you for sharing.

My wife had PTH scores around 213, her 24 urine tests came back as too low to calculate. Her scans of her neck came back showing 1 tumor when she really had 3. We flew to Tampa and had surgery at NPC. She is cured now. I hope someone can help you find out whats going on.

My next step is to see a really good internist who is in Ocala & see if he can refer me for a parathyroid 4D-CT at Ocala Radiology. The endocrinologist I saw seemed to know very little about my hypercalcemia symptoms & was only interested in my TSH & T4.

NPC would not take my case in spite of the fact that I had 75% of the symptoms they describe on their website, had recently had my first kidney stone, and my urine calcium was high. They only would recognize high serum calcium or high PTH.

That's too bad. My wifes calcium was 10.7 before surgery.

The only cure for parathyroidism is to have one or both removed by a surgeon who has proven competent in their removal. All symptoms will disappear within 24 hours after the surgery. There is a practice in Florida that specializes in removing the parathyroids. They have no association with the thyroid despite their name.
I had multiple symptoms and no idea what was causing them. The most prominent was with my memory. I took a friend to all appointments for that reason.
It sounds like a fairy tale but within 24 hours of surgery I was free of symptoms with no medications or a treatment plan. I wish I had written down all the symptoms. I had no idea they would fade so quickly that I could not remember them. Out patient surgery. Quick recovery.
It is a trip from start to finish.

Your right, 9.4 is normal, I was thinking it was 10.4. Its still possible to have primary Hyperparathyroidism with a normal calcium and elevated PTH. How many years have you had a high PTH? Has your calcium ever gone above 10.2?

The excellent internist that I see in Ocala has referred me for a parathyroid 4 dimensional CT scan at Radiology Associates of Ocala. Hopefully this scan will confirm a parathyroid adenoma.

Like what teresa said, I'd get a second opinion from another health provider like Mayo, NPC, or even the Cleveland clinic.

I recently had a parathyroid scan and it showed a possible parathyroid adenoma. I was wondering if anyone has had parathyroid surgery and could share your personal experience. Thanks.

The date on your post is April so my response may be irrelevant. I had the surgery several years ago. It was outpatient, over quickly with very little discomfort. In my case the surgeon took all of my parathyroids. Every negative symptom related to parathyroidism vanished in less than 48 hours. It is suggested to search for a doctor who has done that specific surgery a number of times. Several years down the road and my calcium level, bone density, etc. are a bit off. In my case the surgery had to happen. My symptoms were impacting my daily life far too much.
There is a medical facility in Florida that specializes in parathyroid removal. I will find the name and post it here.

It's the Norman Parathyroid center in Tampa Florida! My wife had her surgery there at Tampa General Hospital and it was a great time for both of us.
