Kahler Grand in Rochester

Posted by amywood20 @amywood20, Oct 25, 2021

Hello! I am traveling to Mayo in November and have reservations at the Kahler Grand since it right across the street from the Clinic. I have selected one of the newly renovated rooms. In the past, we have stayed at an Airbnb. Since I am traveling alone this time and won't have a vehicle, I picked the Kahler Grand due to location. Has anyone stayed there in one of their renovated rooms? I am on the verge of cancelling and picking a different hotel, as I've seen some not to great reviews. I am very mobile so walking isn't an issue. The reason for the trip is to see someone in their spine center. I had an ACDF C4-C6 in Dec 2019 where I live and am having problems. Something isn't right so I am seeking out the experts at Mayo. When I have been there before it's been for my PKD/PLD but unfortunately, I am unable to be seen for that this trip. Anyway, looking to see if anyone has anything positive to say about the Kahler Grand before I cancel and look elsewhere to another connecting hotel. Thanks!

Yes. Stayed for 42 nights while receiving proton radiation. The view of the Mayo Gonda building was great. Can walk to everything. The Marriott was too pricey for us for 42 nights. More than 30 is a lease at a reduced rate and tax exempt

If I were only going for 1-3 nights, I would spring for the pricier hotel

Have you had a problem in the past with the shuttle. It has been a few years for us but we used the shuttle every day and they were Johnny on the spot, even in the dead of winter.

@auntieoakley I haven't used the shuttle before. Part of me just wants to be connected so that I can walk to shops or other things during my down time since I won't have a vehicle.

@amandaburnett I just realized there is a Hyatt in Rochester now, which wasn't there the last trip. We have their credit card and so many points I could stay there for free. It's three miles away from Mayo and they do run a shuttle. Even though it would be free, I'm not sure I want to rely on the shuttle. I'd prefer a hotel connected to Mayo, which they are not.

The Hyatt is a couple blocks behind the Methodist hospital. You can see it from Central Park

The Hyatt House is 3 blocks from Mayo Clinic. It's within walking distance.

I loved the downtown close to the clinic but alas the rates are higher and we were there for months at a time. The shuttle ran every hour from all of the different Mayo buildings to the different hotels during the day. They tell you which color your shuttle is and we had the same driver every day. We found better hotel rates outside of downtown, and very much enjoyed the shops and dining downtown during the day and the more relaxed setting in the evenings. We stayed at Townplace suites so there was a host of places for dinner within walking distance. I would however not recommend the international guest house. I hate to say it but it was so bad, I scrubbed everything with bleach and then still couldn’t be comfortable so I ate the fee and checked out, luckily it was winter and a few less people so we got our one bedroom at townplace.

Hi @amywood20, I can't speak for the Hyatt shuttle, but I do know that downtown public transportation is very reliable because of the weather. However, the subways are definitely a perk to staying in one of the hotels closer to campus.
