Wigs: Prepping for hair loss due to chemo: Where to start?

Posted by ahurlbert30 @ahurlbert30, Aug 13, 2020

Hey all, just prepping for the loss of my hair. I’d like to get a couple wigs but don’t know where to start. I can’t tell online what is decent and what is not.
Thanx

@merpreb I'm probably a bit late to the party here but my experience was similar to yours. I was prescribed a pretty heavy duty regimen of folfirinox (pancreatic cancer) and was convinced my hair would fall out. I cut my hair short but my hairdresser wasn't keen on cutting it as short as I wanted - she kept saying "not everyone loses their hair", but from all I'd read about the side effects and the type of chemo I thought no way could it stay in place.

I didn't want huge hanks of my long hair coming out in my hands and thought hair loss would be more tolerable with shorter hair. Held off on the wigs but bought several head wraps and caps.

What do you know? Other than some slight thinning, not noticeable to anyone but me and my husband, my hair stayed put! Some people suffer little to no hair loss, even on a pretty harsh form of chemo. Not sure if it's genetic or what.

Caryn, not all chemo drugs cause hair loss. My dad didn’t lose his hair either. Folfirinox can cause hair to thin, and for some people, to fall out. Other chemo types cause hair loss in almost every patient, like taxotere, doxorubicin, irinotecan, gemcitabine. You can read more about why this is in this article:

Hi ! I did the cold cap system & thank God didn’t loose any hair I used Penguin cold caps. I also got financial assistance from Hair to stay Hairtostay.org. It even works on the red devil chemo. It was important for me to keep my hair & I did. Thank you God some hospitals provide them but they’re very expensive. When you rent them it’s much more affordable

My hair fell out about 2 1/2 weeks into chemo with Taxol. I bought a nice wig but i never liked it. It just felt fake and uncomfortable on my head. A few weeks into radiation my technician mentioned that I had hair growing in. I was so happy; I had been thinking that maybe I'd be one of the rare birds who never got her hair back. Now my hair is about once inch long, soft gray and the nicest hair I have ever had. I'd colored it for so many years, it was never a nice texture. I'm tickled pink with my new hair. I bought so many scarves and hats and the wig, and I got so little use out of them. The "bald" time passes quickly.

Sometimes I miss the bald days! It was easy to shower, pat dry and off I go! ☺️ Lost my hair 3 times during treatments and I have to say, this time it came back with a really cool texture.

I agree with you about bald days. It's an automatic thing we do, bending over to wash our hair when we get in the shower. I am glad I've only gone through this once, so far. Do you have chemo curls? I do, kind of interesting. You are a real trooper!

Initially I looked like Christopher Walken! LOL. Wire bristles sticking straight up. But over time, as the hair grew out, it’s definitely thicker in texture, has a nice coarseness to it and holds a style…alas, no curls. My hair has always been just stick straight and not a lot of it. Now I seem to have more hair and it works with me! Hope it stays that way!
We’re all troopers~overcomes! Any of us who keep fighting no matter the odds, right? Hugs.

I bought a spray that makes my hair curlier. This is so new to me, but I love it!

You said your hair came in curly and you bought a spray to make it even curlier. Good for you! I fought the whole white haired bozo the clown look for several years and then decided to embrace my curls. Did it come in the same color as you had before, not including the coloring?

I hadn't seen my real color since I was in my early 20's, but I think it was gray by the time I lost it. I do like the way it is white in front and gray on top and in back. I decided to crunch up the curls a bit with the mousse.

Mine came in the same, gray, white, extra curly, but it went out brown and nary a curl in sight. Hahahaha
