Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

This article presents case studies of 4 patients with a pre-existing condition called paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare acquired, life-threatening disease of the blood. The disease is characterized by destruction of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia), blood clots (thrombosis), and impaired bone marrow function (not making enough of the three blood components).

In these patients, it appears that the vaccine may induce worsening anemia.

Kvdp, does your daughter have PNH? How are doctors treating her low iron levels?

Thank you. I have not been instructed to take iron. I think the doctors are still looking for the source of the problem. My iron is definitely low. I did not realize that it would take so long to repair my iron levels.

I also had the exact same reaction. I had a complete physical in April 2021, before changing jobs and all blood work was in normal range. I had the 1st dose of the Pfizer vaccine in August and the 2nd on Sept 4. I started noticing fatigue, as it progressed by heart rate was elevated. I went to urgent care and they did an ekg, chest x-ray and blood work. My hemoglobin dropped to 6.8. They also suspected an internal bleed. I went to the emergency room and was given 2 pints of blood. I have never has an issue with anemia before. Nothing in my normal routine has changed. I can only assume it is from the vaccine as well.

It seems like more and more people are having the same issues, but I have not heard anything about it in the media . For months I was googling covid vaccine and anemia and nothing came up. I went to bing, did a search and I found this message board . I am starting to think that google is censoring anything that might be a negative for the vaccine just like twitter and facebook has been doing. At least I know I am not crazy now that I know other people have had similar issues. Do you plan on getting the booster shot?

You must be careful with iron but in your current situation it should be good to start , confirm with your Dr. all these issues seem to be the same but we must rely on Dr input. Although we must also take an active roll in our treatment. The problem is they all follow Protocols , this is a new issues so no protocols exist. They go with the older protocol and start looking for bleeding first. If you read through this blog you will see everyone falls through the same process first they wanna colonoscopy then they need the upper endoscopy. Generally both show nothing.

After reading all of your reports and comments here, I decided to look at VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System https://wonder.cdc.gov/controller/datarequest/D8) and search for low hemoglobin or low ferritin reports. There were 420,000 adverse events reported out of 330,000,000 Covid vaccine doses administered. Of those 778 reported low hemoglobin or ferritin, 324 of those from the Pfizer vaccine. We cannot tell from this simple search exactly when, in relation to injection, these events were reported. Now is there a cause/effect proven by reporting. To make a comparison, I also looked at reduced ferritin/hemoglobin in VAERS for the Shingrix and Quadravalent flu vaccines (with far fewer doses delivered than Covid) and found 23 for each, out of 30-40 thousand VAERS reports.

I understand that this is undoubtedly underreported, especially since the discovery is coming some time after the vaccine. So, I would say that there appears to be some indication that some people may experience lower hemoglobin at a point after vaccination. In addition, it is known that some people show lower hemoglobin after having the Covid virus (even after a mild case sometimes.)

Perhaps, at some point we will come to a better understanding of all the interactions between Covid infections, the vaccine, and our bodies.

Has anyone experienced either
1) dangerously low hemoglobin of ferritin after vaccination, or
2) numbers that are not recovering?

On 9/4/2021 I had my 2nd Pfizer Covid Vaccine. I started feeling fatigued, short of breathe and light headed. Went to my local urgent care my hemoglobin level was 6.8 - I was referred to the Emergency Room where I required 2 pints of blood. Nothing has changed in my daily routine to cause this. I had my annual physical in April 2021 my hemoglobin was 12.9.

I just had occasion for a GI consult on another issue, and because this issue is a hot topic on Connect I asked why they start with these 2 tests. Her reply was that it is protocol because over 70% of anemia cases show a bleed in one of the 2 tests, even now, so it needs to be addressed. Once that is ruled out, they look for other causes. She said if they give iron or blood transfusions without determining a cause, and the patient feels better, even temporarily, they go away without an accurate diagnosis and may not come back. This can be life threatening.

I am curious - when did the symptoms begin after that second dose? Did you tell the ER personnel or your doctor, and if so did they report to VAERS?
How are you feeling now, and what is your present hemoglobin status? (It should be checked regularly after an incident like you reported.)
