Extreme outer ear pain: What can it be?

I have had this pain just like you describe now for several months but sometimes I can actually sleep on my right ear and not get the pain. Not to often though. Last night it also started on my other ear. I think I am going to try and make me some donuts out of memory foam to put my ear in to try. I sleep mostly on my back but sometimes laying on my right side is the only way I could get to sleep. I still move my head to the side though and that even got my left ear going last night with just very touching the lobe. This is crazy. Hope somebody figures out what is going on. Tonight my right ear lobe is stating to hurt and I haven't even gone to bed yet.

Hello @retiredme and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. One thing that I have personally used as a way to soothe ear pain is a rice bag. It can be as simple as putting white rice in a sock and tying it up then putting it into the microwave to warm it up. I lay it down on the pillow and place the ear with pain on top of it. Anyway, it may be something to help while you figure out what is causing the pain.

I found some information that could help you try to narrow down some potential causes for your ear pain.
