Nissen Funduplication Surgery in the am HELP

Posted by angel213 @angel213, Mar 3, 2021

Hi I’m going to have the funduplication surgery to fix my hiatal hernia and GERD in THE MORNING!!!. It was never severe but I’ve had issue with asthma due to acid backing up etc. I’m scared to death. I’ve considered backing out. I don’t wanna not be able to swallow and I hear it’s a given. I’m so scared. Please tell me what to expect

@tummy
I have had surgeries for large paraesophageal (sliding) hiatal hernia repair.
What type of surgery has been suggested?

I deep wet belch over 3000 x a day night . I churn 24/7 in my gut and intestines. My hiatal hernia is small but I have 5 other digestive disorders diagnosed. No cure for anything I have . It’s 8 years of hell , just back from Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, re did 3 more tests . My 5 th Gastro Dr in 7 years. I suffer no matter how clean I eat . I’ve tried it all . I hope you get surgery and that’s your cure! I wish mine could be that easy. God Speed .

Wow! You've been and going through way too much. What started or maybe set all of these issues off? I have been diagnosed through gastroenterologist that I have one of the achalasia types and a small hiatal hernia. I am seeing a surgeon now who specializes in this disorder; which has no cure, but there are procedures that can be done to manage. I'm scheduled as of today to have a timed barium swallow to correctly diagnose exactly which one I may have. I admit I'm worried. Just hoping they don't find more issues going on. I sincerely hope that there will be more they can do for you to relieve your discomfort. All the best.

Any help at all from your visit to Mayo?

Dealing with so much is very debilitating.

I try to stay positive… but sometimes I am so overwhelmed.. not only with my digestive/esophagus disorders but with various joint pain and neuralgia.

I hope for a fix for all of us.

Not sure yet. Speak with surgeon Tuesday. How long was your recovery?

@tummy
It depends on the type of surgery and the patient as to how long.

Let me know what the surgeon says.

I'm hoping they keep me Tuesday. The pain is really bad. Stomach, chest through to my back, throat, jaw. and teeth. I just sit around and whimper.

@tummy I have post operative gastroparesis, Slowness of the stomach emptying... It can take 4 hours, and there is still 20 % left in there .. when the hairnet system of nerves were damaged by the surgeon the stomach has to depend more on gravity doing the emptying process... and if you put your food through a blender or food processor.. that cuts the digestive time in the stomach by half.... according to my Mayo MN GI Doc... He has been at Mayo 9 yrs..and is now moving to Australia...
I used to be able to eat yogurt but since that failed Nissen that does not work.. I found that "Kefir" a cultured milk product really helps me as a probiotic as well.. I cannot drink Ensure as it has a lot of yogurt in it too... I had lost 50 pounds in the 2 months after the failed Nissen but MayoMN gave me a way to cope I gained 20-25 back... so at 170-175 .. 5'-9".. My Bone Mass Index is healthy..slender is good.. and with Covid around that is a good rating to watch...

Zee Gee , no they had same diagnoses that I already knew about after 3 Mayo tests done ☑️. So basically I’m at square one again . Nothing new they can do for me . $5 k later in max out of pocket expenses .. I’m no better . I guess I just had to try though. No where to go from here . I’ve tried and done all other tests . It’s horrible living daily like this for 8 years now .
Gets to you , for sure .
I pray 🙏 we can all be healed . Please Lord heal us .
