I developed hand tremors right after I added Bupropion hydrochloride to my list. Since I'd had no other additions, I just assumed that caused the tremor. Or interaction with another of my cornucopia of meds. No one in my family for several generations had tremors. I see that my doctors are calling it an essential tremor.

Not true. Just because you have a tremor doesn’t mean it’s a essential tremor. I have significant tremors in my right hand and arm. I sent a video to my neurologist who thought it might be an essential tremor. She wanted me to see a Movement Specialist (a neurologist with two years of additional training regarding movement disorders). I had the tremors while I was there and she saw the entire episode and diagnosed it as a functional tremor. There is a big difference between functional tremors and essential tremors. Just thought I would clarify, I don’t want to come off as pushy.
I was diagnosed with functional tremors in March of 21,was learning to control them until past 3 weeks. I have them in right side of body. Now it's like i have to start all ov e r, very frustrating. I had covid in November then in February woke up to right side of body shaking, went to local hospital, they thought i was having stroke so was transferred to bigger hospital, where there neurologist diagnosed me with restless tremors. It wasn't til March where movement nerology said functional.
Hi Nemo,
I haven't found anyone currently on Connect who has talked about functional tremors. @johnjames has talked about shaking related to Parkinson's however.
Nemo, what part of your body is affected by the tremors? Is the shaking constant or do certain situations calm the shaking or make it worse?
Hi @rustyrose01 I see you’re new to Mayo Clinic Connect so I’d to take a moment to welcome you to our community forum. As you can see you’re not alone with having bodily tremors.
You were recently diagnosed with Functional Tremors. There is a difference between those and Essential Tremors as you may have read in previous posts.
Essential tremors are a neurological disorder and treated by a neurologist. However, Functional Tremors have nervous system symptoms that can’t be explained by a neurological disease or other medical condition.
The cause of functional neurologic disorders is unknown. The condition may be triggered by a neurological disorder or by a reaction to stress or psychological or physical trauma,
It sounds as though your neurologist is trying to get to the root of your tremors by making sure there isn’t an underlying psychological matter that may be causing your symptoms. That’s why there is a referral to a psychiatrist. I know that always gives the assumption that “There’s something wrong with you and you need to see a shrink”. I think that’s the sense I’m picking up from your comment. But it’s not any inflection on you whatsoever. Your neurologist is being thorough because he/she apparently found no neurological cause. Which I would think is positive news.
I have Essential Tremors. My right hand shakes and I take 50 mg of Primidone. It definitely does help. Don't know if Functional and Essential Tremors are the same thing.
I have essential tremors; does that count? They are hateful. I used to draw. I used to design. I used to sew.

I have functional tremors all over my body. The doctor that diagnosed me is a neurologist. He just told me to go to a phsyciatrist.

How long have you had the tremors?
I have orthostatic tremor disorder. I’m trying to find someone else that has this disorder since it’s so rare. Just to see how they cope.
