Intermittent Fasting with Chronic Kidney Disease

Posted by m1rmiller @m1rmiller, Dec 6, 2020

I'm new to this group. I am 74 years old and was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease 8 years ago. I have managed to avoid dialysis so far. My creatinine has fluctuated between 3.5 and 4.5 during the entire 8 years. I've been experimenting with intermittent fasting for the past few months. Does anyone have any experience with that combination and what sort of experience was it for you?

Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with Stage 3b CKD a few days ago. I am Type 2 diabetic. I was placed on blood pressure meds and told to “drink more and cut down my protein.” I have been intermittent fasting for about 4 months. I’ve managed to lose 40 pounds and probably need to lose another 20-25 (according to the BMI). My a1c is now 5.6. My question is, now that I have been diagnosed with CKD, should I stop using intermittent fasting? Wondering if the fasting may have been doing damage to my kidneys?

Thanks for reading this. I am 48 years old with a wife and young daughter. I’m absolutely scared to death about this. Any information would be much appreciated!

Hello @citizenottawa, Welcome to Connect. Keep up the great work on the weight loss and healthy eating! Earlier in this discussion @LeeAase shared that his wife had stage 3 kidney disease and now has normal kidney function due to the changes she made - here is the post by Lee - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/597944/

@gingerw shared the following information earlier in the discussion on page 1 but I thought I would repeat it here for you. -- The American Society of Nephrology posted this article about IF and kidney disease https://www.asn-online.org/education/kidneyweek/2020/program-abstract.aspx?controlId=3448574

I'm sure your doctor is extremely happy with your progress. Have you discussed your concerns or questions with your doctor?

Thanks so much for your reply, John. I didn’t speak to my doctor! I was in for a diabetes check. The nurse shared the information. I requested an appointment with the doctor. I’m waiting to hear back. Thanks again for your reply. It really means a lot.

My wife @lisaaase is a member of this group too so I'm tagging her. She had been diagnosed with Stage 3 Kidney Disease (which I understand is nothing near what @m1rmiller has) a few years ago and has been on a mostly grain-free, low-carb diet and mostly one meal a day (OMAD) intermittent fasting. Her most recent blood tests show normal kidney function. She's just one case, but in addition to other health benefits it seems her approach has helped with kidneys too.

Hi I am jumping in on your blog. What prompted your wife to try intermittent dieting? I would like to have more information. Please share. Thank you.

I am debating, but even the studies that were done independently aside from the drug companies, suggest that an SGLT 2 should be in the first line of defense to slow CKD progression. There are a pethoria of you tube videos explaining the studies and how the drugs work. Many very good. This is newly approved for CKD, but the drugs have been out there for awhile.

Diet and workouts are your best bet and should be used in conjunction with any pill. Food is the best medicine.
