Extreme outer ear pain: What can it be?

Posted by ellienewfan @ellienewfan, Feb 4, 2013

Please....someone help me.

I’ve visited my allergist, an ear-nose-throat specialist and my own internist.
None of them have ever heard of my problem and don’t know how to help me.

Started approx 20 yrs ago, Every couple of months I would get an awful pain on one of my ears if I had been laying on it during the night. It would happen to either ear, whichever one I laid on.

To describe the pain. It is so intense that it wakes me. Pain is NOT inside the ear but around the edges of the entrance of it. It is so painful, I can’t touch it. It will be throbbing. It also hurts tremendously behind, towards the bottom back of the ear. Can’t touch that either. The only thing that will make it go away is when I then get up and stand and within approx 30 min it is gone. I even tested it by massaging behind the ear (once I could bear to touch it) and it seemed to make pain go away faster.

The last approx 3 years, I have no longer been able to even lay on either ear when in bed because now the pain will come every time. I have learned to sleep on my back. Sometimes I would still move onto my side during night, and wake up with pain.

For last 6 months, I’ve been having pressure and achy feeling around one of the ears, even while laying on my back. Then I started getting the pain even while sleeping on my back.

I am very much afraid that the day will come when I will no longer be able to lay down in my bed to go to sleep.

I am desperate to get to the bottom of this and perhaps for first time in 20 years be able to comfortably lay on my side in bed.

My ENT doctor said my ears are healthy .... i have no hearing loss.

This ear pain, however, is starting to affect my daily living, since I don’t seem to be able to get the restful sleep I need.

I will be forever grateful if someone could pinpoint this. thanks.

I did have the same problem for over a year i was suffering so much pain then i decided to change the type of my pillow i was using as i thought the best pillows Sheridan memory foam pillows it was so comfortable but not to my ears, To describe the pain. It is so intense that it wakes me.Pain is NOT inside the ear but around the edges of the entrance of it. It is so painful, I can’t touch it. It will be throbbing. It also hurts tremendously behind, towards the bottom back of the ear. & i would have the part of my ear feels bubbly it was getting worse every day, First time i thought maybe my pillow is getting old i ordered the same pillow my ear was getting worth instead of getting better the i decided to get cheap Tontine pillow ever since then i never felt the pain again i hope my experience will help you, Good luck. Has anyone tried the pillow with an ear hole in it? I haven’t but I see it is for people like us with outer ear pain. Hate to spend the money if it doesn’t work.

Hi Mona @monaarnaout and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am so glad to hear that your ear pain cleared up in switching the material of your pillow. It is definitely a testament that expensive is not necessarily better. It's all dependent on your comfort level and your body.
Can you tell us what your current pillow is made of? Did you speak with an allergist to see if perhaps you were allergic to the last pillows contents?

Previously i was using the Memory foam from polyurethane, Tontine the pillow that helped me get better is made of Cotton Polyester,

I had the pain for over 2 years, and I resorted to sleeping with my hand under my cheek to keep pressure off my ears. It only helped a little and caused me to wake over and over every night. I come back and do a search every so often to see if there are any stories of relief, and I just can't remember where I saw the vitamin / calcium solution. I'll keep looking, because it's made such a difference in my life. I'd forgotten how it felt to actually sleep. I suffer from chronic neck and back pain too, and sleeping on my side is the only option I have, so this was a huge issue. This may not help all others suffering with this, but it's so easy to try. Give it a little time. Hope it helps.

I’m just so glad I’m not the only one with this very weird ear pain! Mine started a few months ago and I couldn’t figure out why it was happening even though it was obvious because I was sleeping on that side. At first I thought my ear folder over and that was why but as it persisted and seemed to happen every night and it was even sore all the next day, I never told anyone because it’s just bizarre and I had no clue how to explain it to people that didn’t understand. If was weird to me living it, I know I’d get strange looks when trying to explain it!
So after finding out that it wasn’t just me, I told my husband about it and he agreed it was strange but knew I was excited to find that I wasn’t alone in this ‘painful, sleeping on my ear’ problem. Looking at the vitamin D and calcium solution, I’ll give it a try.

This Ear Issue is an Ear Pressure Sore, Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis (CNH), a Bedsore of the Ear. I, too, am experiencing this issue. I am nearly bedridden from my disability, and have this issue in my right ear, and the outside edge of the cartridge.

Hello @jason4usmc, Welcome to Connect. @monaarnaout @gdrum and others have mentioned a few tips to help the ear pain including a special pillow with a hole in the center for your ear. Has your doctor offered any suggestions to help with the symptoms?

What I find frustrating is that doctors don’t know what it is. Never heard of it and really don’t look any further in helping you.

I have had this pain just like you describe now for several months but sometimes I can actually sleep on my right ear and not get the pain. Not to often though. Last night it also started on my other ear. I think I am going to try and make me some donuts out of memory foam to put my ear in to try. I sleep mostly on my back but sometimes laying on my right side is the only way I could get to sleep. I still move my head to the side though and that even got my left ear going last night with just very touching the lobe. This is crazy. Hope somebody figures out what is going on. Tonight my right ear lobe is stating to hurt and I haven't even gone to bed yet.
