Has anyone tried a time release medication for painful peripheral neuropathy?

That’s exactly my point. I go to sleep with ice pack and 600mg Gabapentin (10:30pm). I’m woken up by 3 or 4 am with pain. I think my pain dr mentioned time release. Just checking to see if anyone has used it.

Hi. I saw some replies mentioned about Gralise. It’s no longer available but Nucynta works really well. I use th immediate release. U can have it 3 times / day but it has sexual side effects so I only do 2 times / day. I supplement with a ton of herbals. Once th state took our pain meds in 2016 it got bad n I had to find alternatives until I got a new pain doctor.
I use:
Evening primrose oil ( GLA is th main workhorse). Don’t believe it’s only fr women.
Kava - tremors
Lemon balm
Gymnema Sylvestre-Tinnitus/ ear pain
Topical calendula, comfrey oils plus Salon Pas numbing.

Good luck. I find lots of info on neuropathy sites talking to others.

Good evening @pkagarwal, I couldn't help but notice that you have handled the Gabapentin similarly to what I did. I too am now at 600 mg in the evening and wondering if I should try to go to 300. I was at 1200 like you. I added Cymbalta, first at 30 mg, and raised it to 90 mg as I was withdrawing from Gabapentin. It is working for me.

Have you used in other pain medications for your feet? Do they ever feel like icicles?

May you have contentment and joy.
Chris

I’m on 1500mg total of gabapentin taken three times during the day. I’m on Cymbalta also. My feet burn like crazy but I’ve gotten relief from ice packs, the meds and spinal cord stimulator. I’ve run the gammet on meds and creams.

My understanding is that Gabapentin commonly causes swelling in hands and feet. It can also raise your heart rate. I’m off of it now per my Cardiologist at Mayo.

Be careful; Nucynta is an opioid. It also causes fast heart rate episodes. I’m titrating off of it to help my heart.

The only thing that helped me was kratom and it did wonders. It works for the pain, is 100 natural and not addictive plus gives you energy and cured my depression. I have been taking it about ten years. It also starts working in 30 minutes. It saved my sanity and life.

I take 1200 mgs of gabapentin twice a day - no side effects. And I take a Lyrica at night - it makes me sleepy. Peggy

I had been on Lyrica for about 13+ yrs. & was switched to Gabapentin about 1-2 yrs. ago. I was told Gabapentin was the generic Lyrica. If so, why do you take both? Just wondering. Maybe I'm missing something by taking Gabapentin. I've had no problems w/Gabapentin & I really like the lesser amount for the Rx cost.

Gabapentin is the generic for Neurontin whereas pregabalin is the generic for Lyrica.
The drugs are similar though. Both are Anticonvulsants and used for Focal seizures but also help some people with nerve damage. I can’t imagine why your doctor would tell you that.
Lyrica also has a generic extended release version. Which eliminates the peaks and valleys of the immediate release version and may lessen side effects. Of course it’s going to be more expensive.
Take care,
Jake

My doctor said that I was at the maximum of gabapentin I could take - it was working but ran out after about 6 hours. He said we could add Lyrica once a day. There are a few more things they can add as our disease progresses and overwhelms the medicine. Nortriptyline (spelling?) and some other stuff. I like gabapentin better as it does not make me sleepy and Lyrica does. So, I take the Lyrica at night and the gaba during the day. Peggy

Don't believe gabapentin is generic Lyrica. However good question for your Pharmacist.

Good morning Peggy,
What dose of Gabapentin are you taking?
Do you know the reason your doctor said you were taking the maximum dose? Are you having side effects?
How long have you been taking Lyrica? The drowsiness may lessen over time, usually weeks to months,
Jake
