Collagen for osteoporosis?

Posted by cpb @cpb, Jul 26, 2021

My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

Hello,

I have been taking the LiveWell brand of collagen peptides (grass fed and pasture raised) with 19 amino acids for about a year and a half.
I put a scoop in my coffee every day. I have seen a difference in skin and hair. My nails were always strong.

Nice to know that it helps osteoporosis (which I have) . I don’t have any joint pain but used to get occasional right hip aches or pain and have not had any in a very long while. The collagen is in addition to supplements like curcumim, B complex plus, D3, Synergy K (all from Pure Encapsulations) and magnesium glycinate at night. I am conscious of what I eat.

I am not on any osteoporosis drugs but attend 3 senior gym classes a week, walk 2 to 2.5 miles daily and have a routine at night.
I am 80 and I feel great (except the Florida humidity just wipes me out).

The gym classes focus a lot on balance, stretching and strength with some cardio. I do core at night. Our gym teacher who is 81 and in great shape doesn’t want any of us to fall. I have seen too many deaths in my class in the past 8 years that I have been attending and gone to too many funerals…so many of them from falls.

My routine , diet and supplements work for me but I am always interested to read what others are doing.

Stay strong ladies….and gentlemen.

My wife and I both take 2 scoops of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides with our morning coffee daily. She used to have terrible nails and has noticed a great improvement since we've been taking it more than a year now. It's helped my nails and skin also but I still bruise easily from thin skin. My nails are not as brittle as they use to be and look healthier.

what are the five types of Collagen? What I have taken is grass-fed collagen. Is one better?

REPLY

I don't, but I started taking Collagen for my hair and skin. Not sure if this is the way to go, but it is working for my hair. As for bones, I don't know since I have bone problems, and possibly neuropathy.

I believe the 5 types are Keto, Paleo, bovine, marine and chicken.
Grass fed collagen comes from a better source…the waste of grass fed cows doesn’t have toxins like antibiotics. People who don’t eat meat can opt for marine collagen…the waste from fish etc although I would research sustainable brands. I happen to think either marine or bovine is the best but would research the source of any of the five.

There are so many brands and hype it can be hard to choose. I am lucky in that my daughter is a Nurse Practitioner who is passionate about health and nutrition and does extensive research. So I rely on the brands she chooses for her family. They all get collagen peptides along with supplements. She is basically my doctor and advisor and I only see an eye and ear specialist.

Grass fed may be a little less expensive than marine but I plan on looking into marine….heard that they are good for wrinkles also and that you may see results faster. These collagens can be pricy. I am happy with the results of mine but curious about the marine type.

Anyway they are from waste products so it is good for our environment.

There is a lot of advertising hype. I used to use the one rated 2nd but now have switched to the Vital Proteins brand mainly because I didn't like the other one as I could taste it a little in my coffee where as I can't taste the Vital Proteins brand in my coffee. Here's one reference that might be helpful if you are in the market for collagen.

Thanks for all the information. What is the brand you use? I did not know there were so many brands on the market today so how do you choose?

I use the brand LiveWell. Online only…I think Amazon has it but I don’t trust Amazon for a lot of things and rather go to the manufacturers website as a rule. Choose one per your diet…vegan or paleo or if you eat everything. As I mentioned…research the source..grass fed is better for bovine collagen and sustainable waters for marine collagen. As with everything…food etc… check where they are sourced from and look at the ratings. If you get the name of a farm for grass fed beef , for example, do a little research on the farm.
Yeah…requires some thought and research but you are putting it into your body….or on your face when it comes to cosmetics.
@johnbishop has some sources you can view and he does his research.
