Hello @janc56, Welcome to Connect, an online community where patients share their experiences, find support and exchange information with others. If you don't mind sharing, was the pramipexole (Mirapex) prescribed to treat restless leg syndrome or Parkinson's disease? Have you discussed tapering off of the drug with your doctor or asked if there may be an alternative?

Hi John, thank you for your quick answer. I'm on the Mirapex for restless leg. I only found out about all this yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to talk to her yet, but will be asap! I am hoping there is an alternative that isn't a dopamine agonist.

Gabapentin Question:
Good morning, all: I am asking this question to the largest group of you who may be on gabapentin. I started 6 weeks ago on 300, 3x a day but needed more relief so am on 600, 600, and 900 for what I think may be SFN, but will get my formal diagnosis next week. I have just developed a metallic taste in my mouth and my tongue is very red. (My dentist ruled out any real dental concerns.) My question: did any of you switch to a better pain med (such as Lyrica or an antidepressant) that took away your pain but did not give you the metallic taste? I want to present alternatives to my neurologist at my follow-up since I'm afraid he will dismiss it as an unfortunate side effect. Will appreciate all your help. Many thanks.

Some advice from this group would be helpful. My neuropathy has been active and progressing now for 4 years. My feet feel like bags of sand and the neuropathy is progressing up the outside of my legs. My doctor insists it is diabetic, but my A1C has always been around 6. I think the neuropathy is caused by my neural foramen stenosis. Is there a test or a scan that is definitive?

@dunkinmacdougall -- Since neural foraminal stenosis is a type of spinal stenosis I think the tests are the same and the doctors evaluate based on X-rays, MRIs or CT according to Mayo Clinic - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/spinal-stenosis/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20352966

Have you heard of Myofascial Release Therapy (MFR)? There is a discussion on the topic you might find helpful.

I'm assuming that your tongue is not swollen & that your not on antibiotics.
Did the red tongue & taste start right away or soon after starting Gabapentin? I would contact a pharmacist and ask if your symptoms are potential side effects. You might even go see an ENT doc or just phone your Neurologist.
Gabapentin is normally a very well-tolerated medication despite all its potential side effects.
If it is a side effect I wonder if it will react like many others do and decrease in severity or go away entirely within weeks to months.
I have been on epilepsy forums for years but haven't heard of Gabapentin causing these problems.
I hope you will keep us informed.
Best of luck to you,
Jake

Thank you, Jake. No, not swollen but a little red. I appreciate your help. I may just have dry mouth from it, or it is a personal side effect for me. I hope it does go away, but I will contact my neurologist. Thanks, again for that idea.

@arlenereiss55 - If you only have numbness in your feet like I do, there is another discussion you may want to read through the posts to see if you find something that may help you.

Neuropathy: Numbness only, no pain: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/neuropathy-numbness-only-no-pain/

I see that you have asked questions in several discussions but not have mentioned what your symptoms are or said what you diagnosis is. Are you able to share what your symptoms and diagnosis is?

Red Maeng da if I spelled it right. It’s 100 percent natural and I never had any problems quitting. I’ve been relieving my pain about ten years with it. Also helps with depression.
