Piriformis muscle with bowel issues

Posted by yenva @yenva, Jul 6, 2021

Hi there, My husband is 41 and has had trouble with his bowel movements for the last 15mths. Dr's dont know what it is, has anyone had issues with this muscle and know what to do... we are lost and its not a life for him. In pain 24/7 and cant stop going to the loo for hours on end. We are seeing a Rehab specialist in a few days as the meds he put my husband on arent working as well as planned. Any help would be great

I have that same thing. What it seems to do is pull your pelvis out of wack in the lower sacrum which causes irregularities in your colon. It might be coming from your L4-L5, S1 or S2. Doctors don’t understand this. Physical therapist might be able to help with that. Good luck. Do you have groin pain.

I had success learning a series of pelvic floor exercises from a great Mayo PT, Jenny!

It would be hard to tell you how to do the exercise. A PT would be better prepared. It has to do with tightening your stomach muscles, but it’s not the same as doing sit-ups. You could try contracting the muscles and holding a bit.

@yenva, I don't know if these are comparable to the exercises that @basslakebabe19 has been doing or not, but could be a start to learning more.

- How to do pelvic floor exercises:

@yenva, have you done any similar pelvic floor exercises before?

@basslakebabe19 are these comparable?

Kegels — I agree that it is a good start. But what is also needed also is learning how to contract your stomach muscles. Suck in and hold a bit and then release. Repeat! Put a soft ball between your knees and squeeze / hold a bit. Those are good starting exercises.

Kegels are more for urinary tract issues, whereas bowels require stomach control.
