What happens after C.Difficile?

Posted by dn22 @dn22, Dec 6, 2018

I got C.diff back in October (early to mid). I had taken clindamycin for BV and it didn't react well for me. I went into the ER for intense pain, bloating, and diarrhea. They found out I had a severe case of colitis, my entire bowel system was extremely inflamed. But they didn't know what type of colitis it was until my 3rd day there. Then they did the colonoscopy, endoscopy, and biopsy. So they treated me with antibiotics. Sent me home with more antibiotics. And after finishing them, and giving it a few days I felt better.

I was still more aware of my bowels, which is saying something since I have IBS already. But other than awareness, and maybe some tenderness in a way, it was normal. Then Thanksgiving came, and I ate what my family made. I had immediate diarrhea and pain. I thought it was the dairy, bc I forgot to start taking my IBS meds again. They had me stop taking them for awhile after being diagnosed with c.diff. Then I tried the food the next day, after taking my IBS meds. Same issues.

So I decided no more thanksgiving food. But the pain, bloating, twisting feeling, and pooping didn't stop. And I would get the urge, but when I went to go, it'd be a lot of gas, that was hard put to come up. When I would poop, the stool itself was very hard, and not a lot would come out.
My mother bought me stool softener. It made the stool less dry and sandpaper-like. But I still wasn't getting any relief.
So last Friday she gave me some of her Super Colon Cleanse (about 3/4-5/8 of a scoop/serving) mixed with Metamucil in a water bottle. And I drunk half the mixture. I still haven't stopped pooping. I'm pooping for hours again, just like with c.diff. No blood this time though. And the stool is pellet like.
I keep waking up to poop, or try to poop. I can't eat anything. Especially not carbs or dairy. I feel like I'm dying, but in a very different way than when I had c.diff.
I don't know what's happening. If I should go to the hospital or not. Or if c.diff has different symptoms the 2nd time around. Or if, because it was such a severe case, that my bowels were damaged somehow. I'm really just not all right, and idk what to do.

I’m 34 and took Bactrim because I had knee surgery and the site started turning pink. I took it for 3 days before the side effects were excruciating. 10 days later, my stomach was still a mess. Diahrrea was 3-4x in the morning only. It was extremely weird. The dr had me do a cdiff test. it came back negative, but said it can be hard to detect so she put me on flagyl. Flagyl didn’t do anything besides get rid of the weird odor from my stools. She then put me on vancomycin. I have seen the most improvement taking that. It has been 3 days since I stopped taking it, and this morning my stomach seemed a little more “aggressive” this morning. I’m honestly not sure if I even had cdiff since the test came back negative and they are treating me for the wrong thing. I have no elevated wbc. Labs are normal, just show some inflammation that suggests something with my stomach. That was when the prescribed the vanco. It seems like everyone is here goes to the bathroom all day. Mine is only in the morning. I feel like the drs think I’m crazy. I have become depressed, and want to get back to normal for my young children and husband. Anyone have any thoughts at what could be going on? I’m going to order the florastor probiotic.

Please see my other posts about this. It is not just taking antibiotics but also preventing relapses through eating proper diet post antibiotics that does not produce inflammation or allows the bad bacteria to return. I took four rounds of antibiotics and it was not until I changed my diet that I stopped relapsing. Can’t emphasize this enough. Since I changed my diet, I have gained seven of the twenty pounds I lost in three months and (knock on wood) have not experienced diarrhea in twenty two days. I could see improvement within a week of starting to work with a nutritionist. I was clueless and so was my GI doctor.

Hello, I know this is a comment to an older post but what was the diet? Would you give examples of food choices? I am attempting to do the same after a diagnosis. Thank you very much.

Catherine, do you currently have a c diff infection? What foods agree well with you?

Hello,

Thank you for the reply. I was diagnosed over one month ago and took Vancomycin. I believe it was a mild case and was not on any antibiotics prior to illness. However, I was sick 3 years ago with stomach issues and extreme fatigue and night sweats. The lab kept saying they would not be able to test my sample (too formed) - but I was put on Flagyl by the doctor. From this sickness of 3 years ago, my digestion has never been the same. Last month I was sick, I was diagnosed after finally getting a new gastroenterologist. I now believe this is what I had 3 years ago and it went undiagnosed. I’m trying to figure out what to eat to not have a relapse. I’m in my late 40’s and have a lot of anxiety about it all. Currently, I am eating very bland foods, no gluten, and minimal dairy. The doctor had me get a very expensive refrigerated probiotic.

I read that an ingredient like Trehalose, which is in foods can make things worse and for me, I can’t take anything with zinc (I read in a study that zinc can be bad for this illness) I am hoping a better diet will help.

Hi, I have learnt something new, about the zinc. I had 3 bouts of C Diff in 1 year. I don`t think my guts will ever be the same. Sugar is a trigger for me definitely, so try to minimize my intake of that.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, here is the headline from a study, “ Dietary zinc alters the microbiota and decreases resistance to Clostridium difficile infection” - I also in the last 3 years took a low dose of zinc on an empty stomach and was sick for one day. I had all the symptoms that I recently had last month. I now believe that time too I had it although I never reached out to a doctor and the symptoms resolved back to my regular bad, which is one loose BM a day (trying not to over share). Yes, I will never take a zinc supplement again. Are you put on antibiotics for each bout if you don’t mind me asking? Thank you.

Hi, l took vancomycin for last 2 times, was on it for 6 months very expensive but the flagyl wasn't good, platelets dropped to dangerous low. Took me a long time to wean off the Vanco as l kept having bladder infections, so antibiotics and more vanco. Was a cycle of pills for sure.
Don't be embarrassed to talk about anything on here.
I had diarrhea so bad l got anal fissures and after all this time l am now going in for botox injections for my butt.
Very nervous about that

Good morning;
I am very happy to say that I think I have finally turned a corner with my battle with C Diff and it`s aftermath. the last issue due to severe c diff was anal fissures. I had surgery 3 weeks ago, banding and botox injections. No more pain ,yahoo!!!
It was a year of hell, simply put. I`m happy to answer any questions on recovery!
