Single Sided Hearing Loss
I'm amazed how many posts there have been lately about single sided hearing loss and think having our own thread might be beneficial. I'm missing something really important about this issue and hope someone will please help me understand it. I used to explain my hearing issue to people who asked as follows: when you have two good ears, sound comes in from both sides and your brain can select what it wants to "hear". When you have only one good ear, sound comes in on one side and your brain can't separate out what it wants to "hear." It's all noise. Is that right or am I totally wrong? If it is right and I get the cros hearing aid, how will moving sound from my deaf ear over to my good ear make any difference in my ability to hear? Sound is still going in one side and will still be noise. I understand that if I need the bicros hearing aid, it will pick up the sound from my deaf ear, move it to my good ear and enhance the ability to hear in my good ear. This is really complex. I'm rooting for the new technology in the article Ken sent out about growing new tiny hairs in the ears of hard of hearing people to help them hear more clearly. Thanks for helping me understand this. Nancy

@judysmayo. There is a separate thread for balance, etc. under the hearing loss topic. I don't know how much work it would be to move the posts under this thread down there, but it might be a good task for an intern if MayoConnect has one.
@judysmayo I was thinking something along those lines as well. How about Balance, Vertigo, Training, VRT? 🙂
I relate to this post on SSHL and have similar questions concerning how CROS and BICROS aids can help me. I had sudden single sided hearing loss on left ear approx six years ago and have 'gotten by' . My right ear hearing was normal for a 65+ male, but I haven't had it checked since the initial event and may have had some loss since then. My left ear tested "dead' ... no detectable hearing. My main goal is improved understanding of conversations in noisy environments. Do some CROS or BICROS have better 'Noise Cancellation and filtering' than others ? Do some make use of directional microphones? ... My initial interaction with local hearing aid services is that they didn't relate to the issues of SSHL. I would like to have some assurance that the professional I reach out to has some experience with SSHL and has a general plan of action for a person with my condition before I invest time and money for a solution. Looking for suggestions and direction and understanding of possible solutions.
Has anything been mentioned to you about a cochlear implant on that 'dead' ear? In most cases the hearing nerve is not dead, but is not being stimulate due to the cochlea being damaged. A hearing aid on the better ear and a cochlear implant on the other one may be worth looking into.
I had a cochlear implant on my poorer ear 16 years ago. I use both the CI and a hearing aid. They work wonders together for me.
See if there is a cochlear implant center in your area. It's worth checking out.

Hi, I have severe, total deafness after bacterial meningitis a year ago and my hope is to hear again. Someone has information from the clinical trial of STREKIN AG on its candidate drug STR001 in phase 3 or other clinical trials in view? thank you
I would consider it. I haven't been evaluated for CI, but suspect that i wouldn't qualify. I usually don't have problems understanding conversations in quiet environments with my one good ear. My understanding is that if hearing aids could improve my ability to hear in noisy environments suffifiently, then I wouldn't qualify for CI.
Keep your options open and your eyes on the progress in this area. There are a couple new cochlear implant options for single sided deafness. And, the qualifications for getting a CI have changed quite a bit recently. If and when you find your 'good ear' is not doing well, especially in noisy environments....often the places where social activities take place that we want to be able to participate in...do check it out.
Thank you ... It sounds like I should start out with a clinic that can perform a CI evaluation instead of starting out with an audiologist that cannot perform a CI evaluation.
Hello @mawutodzi and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I have translated your post using Google Translate in order to allow for non-French speaking members to be able to read your posts and respond.
I see you are interested in a clinical trail so wanted to provide you with the information below on Mayo Clinic's clinical trials: https://www.mayo.edu/research/clinical-trials/diseases-conditions/hearing-loss
I also did a quick search of the specific clinical trial you mentioned and found this information: https://www.hearingreview.com/uncategorized/strekin-ag-secures-financing-for-phase-3-clinical-trial-of-hearing-loss-drug
Can I ask if you are in Europe or where (about) you are located as it relates to the availability of this clinical trial?

Hello Amanda, thank you for answering me so early, thank you for saying the work you all do at Mayo Clinic. I am a little relieved to read you. I am in West Africa more precisely in Togo (Lomé ).
I was looking for drug treatment for my deafness and on my research I found these companies that are evolving in this field.
The ENT doctors had suggested cochlear implants to me for my deafness and my tinnitus but living on less than 1 € per day, I will never be able to access the implant, which is why my hope of regaining my hearing is turned towards therapy that may make my inner ear work again.
For the moment I have no option for a clinical trial and I do not know how it goes. You like this situation limits me in all areas: employment, social life, leisure, learning ...
