What causes Clicking or Popping in Throat when Swallowing?

Posted by mushroom @mushroom, Oct 2, 2020

I was doing some neck massages a few days ago and then afterwards whenever I swallow, I feel a clicking/popping sensation and sound when my larynx moves up upon swallow. There is no pain at the moment but the popping sensation in my throat gives me anxiety whenever I swallow. Is this the result of the cartilage rubbing on each other? Is it from the hyoid bone rubbing the thyroid cartilage? Are there exercises that can fix this?

@a06742sl, it is frustrating to not have answers and to get the feeling like people think you're making it up. But your ENT seems to be taking the problem seriously and has referred you to a larynx specialist. That's good, right?

Did you learn anything at your appointment? What are the next steps?

I have had the samething for a year. Went to a ENT doctor who also specializes in the larynx and he said I have to massage the area. Muscles are tight causing that cartilage to catch. I dont know. I guess I will try.

Mine is the same. I went to ENT and he said it was LPR which is silent acid reflux. But after a 6 month diet it is still is clicking. ENT said he didn't know and is referring me to a Larynx doctor. I can't understand if we all are having the same problem why is there not an answer? Very annoying. I feel they think I am making this up.

Same thing. Went to a ENT specializes in larynx . Did therapy for swallowing, totally useless. Had a cortisone in my throat useless. I’m at my wits end because no one seems to be able to ditect it. I have Gastroesaphaegeal and been treated but that doesn’t help either. Says I’m on the strongest of meds. Have you had any answers?

I have the exact same thing. Supposedly I am trying physical therapy. I hope that works. My ENT knows exactly where it is at. He felt it and made it click and pop. I was hoping therapy would work.

Yeah I seen that. Not sure I shoukd do it either. He said he coukd do surgery and shave off some of the cartilage I think. But he woukd prefer this first or he even said Botex. Which is weird. But that us what he said. I will let you know

Sounds exactly like me. I supposedly have LPR did things for that. It helped alittle with the clicking. But didn't totally go away. Did acid free diet dir 6 months. Very aggregating.

Oh yes I have that too. It’s so frustrating because gastro says it’s not what is causing the clicking sounds. What else or where else can do we do,

Same with me , my ENT told me that it’s the hyoid bone rubbing on the thyroid cartlidge, he said he can do surgery but there is 2% chance things can go wrong like not being able to swallow food or not being able to talk, that scared me but he did say those chances are very slim but what if things went south? So I opted out from the surgery and just dealing with it sadly.
