Is there any connection with statin use and neuropathy?

Is there any connection with statin use and neuropathy? I have had numbness and tingling in my hands and fingers, along with severe cramping at night. One NP thought this was carpel tunnel, but my doc does not think so. Any thoughts?

I use a few different ones but my favorite is LifeFlow Magnesium Lotion - https://www.amazon.com/Life-Flo-Magnesium-Supplement-Zechstein-Relaxation/dp/B00K5QUAIG/ref=dp_fod_1. The other one is Aveeno moisturizing lotion - https://www.amazon.com/Aveeno-Moisturizing-Sensitive-Unscented-Therapeutic/dp/B0013OJUY4/ref=sr_1_7.

I think any good lotion you like is OK as long as it keeps your skin from drying out but I'm not too particular 🙂

Stick to creams as they are less drying. Eucerin skin calming or eczema creams are good. Some like CERAV.

I find benedryl cream helps with the tingles. My wild guess is that no impinged nerves are causing this as you are okay at night!

Thank you Marye2. You’re right. Nothing at night. What a great suggestion the Benadryl cream! Will try it.

I just started using Eucerin yesterday along with Glaxal Base cream. It seems to work really well so far as my skin usually cracks easy and it keeps the cracking from happening and heals. Unfortunately, the itchiness is still there.

I have been having foot and leg pain, "pins and needles" and numbness in the lower legs. I have been using atorvastatin for two years. I never had these things before taking it. Is it possible that it is causing all these leg and foot problems?
Thank you

My endocrinologist just told me I had to go on a statin and I asked him if there is an issue with statins and neuropathy, because I already have pain, tingling, numbness, etc. issues with a hereditary neuropathy. He told me there is an issue and prescribed me ezetimibe. I haven't started it yet because some people have a lot of digestive issues with it. You might want to go back to your prescribing doctor (hopefully an endocrinologist) and share your concerns. I hope your neuropathy improves and another med make work for you.

Thanks. My doctor, a primary care physician, told me to try using atorvastatin every other day. She was comfortable with that and didn't expect much rise in cholesterol level. I told her about information on the Mayo website and discussions on it. But she doesn't believe there is a connection between statins and neuropathy.

Many of the health sites I visited say there is a connection. My neuropathy is in the feet and lower legs. Well, if the statin is causing our pain, then we need to find an alternative. So I'm taking it every other day and hopefully keeping cholesterol in check. I'll be praying for the numbness in your your hands. God bless you.

California Zebra; I
have been on Ataravastatin for 3 years and I do not know if I have a problem or not. About 3 years ago, my doctor put me on it and shortly thereafter, I started breaking out in small red spots that were very itchy especially on my scalp. I told my Internal medicine doctor about it and she simply looked at my scalp and said , “oh, my, your scalp is very dry.” So I did nothing about it , But a few weeks ago, I read that one of the side effects of Prolia (which I am getting shots for) could also cause a rash so I called my endocrinologist and tried to make an appt. And he said he would look into it. I have an appt. with him in July to get another Prolia injection but as of today he has not gotten back to me. Extreme itching is almost as bad as severe pain. I really am at the point where just giving up and saying “Oh, well” may be the only answer. However, there is a Prolia hot line that I can call and ask them about the itching. As to the Ataravastatin, I don’t think the doctors that I go to will have the answer and I will have to research the side effects on line. If I find out anything of interest, I will let you know. God help us….one and all!
