Vice grip on both legs with both feet feeling stiff on bottoms.

Posted by darj @darj, Nov 29, 2016

I have been dealing with a leg, foot and lower back issue for 6 years now. It started with my right foot feeling like I had stepped into glue and it dried on the bottom of my foot. Skin feels very tight. Then about 2 months later, my legs started to get very tight and ache. I seem to have trouble controlling them when I stand or walk. Feel like I walk on outside of or sides of feet. Now both feet stiff and both legs feel like there is a vice being tighten down on them. I have had 3 nerve tests, all ok, a PAD test which was negative, all the Lymes tests that I know exist. I have osteopenia, had a low vit.D count but have found no relieve or a close maybe dx. Anybody else ever experience any thing like this? I have seen 3 Neurologists, a Urologist, a Rheumatoligist, my GYN and 4 General Practice Drs.

Hello,
This description is like the sensations I have in my feet, plus a vice-like grip on my knees, numbness in my legs, and tingling in my feet with a dried glue sensation on the bottom of my feet. Did you find out what it was?
thanks for any help,
Matthew

Hello @matthewbull, Welcome to Connect. I think the person who started this discussion @darj may no longer be following Connect. There last post on the first page of this discussion (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/128263/) mentioned they had idiopathic peripheral neuropathy.

Have you seen a neurologist or had any tests done to diagnose your symptoms?

I have seen a neurologist. All blood tests were fine. I was eventually told I had peripheral nerve damage due to excessive alcohol consumption. I was told this would get better over time. That was two years ago with a change in diet and lifestyle. The strange glue-foot sensation continues, burning and cramping sensation in feet and shins, numbness in legs, and a vice-like sensation in the knees. The numbness increases when sitting in a car or at the computer. I was wondering if this is a trapped nerve or something like spinal stenosis.

thanks for any help,

Matthew

There are a couple of other discussions you may find helpful by reading the stories of other members and what experiences they have shared.

Pinched or compressed nerves can cause pain and nerve damage and possibly symptoms you mention but that is something you would need to discuss with your doctor or a neurologist and have some specific tests done to check. My best advice is probably to keep doing what you are doing now - looking for information and learning as much as you can about your health condition. This will help you become a better advocate for your health and hopefully help find treatments that will help your symptoms. My two go to websites for neuropathy information are:

Neuropathy Commons: https://neuropathycommons.org/
The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy: https://www.foundationforpn.org/

You mentioned your doctor said the neuropathy was probably caused by alcohol consumption and that you made diet and lifestyle changes the past two years but you still have the symptoms. Have you discussed possible vitamin deficiencies with your neurologist as part of his diagnosis?

Here's an article that discusses possible supplements to help - Management of alcohol-induced peripheral neuropathy: https://journals.lww.com/nursingmadeincrediblyeasy/fulltext/2019/11000/management_of_alcohol_induced_peripheral.7.aspx

yes I have the the same feelings I have had Pernicious Aniamia for 30 years and I do B-12 injections monthly for that but I have Neuropathy in both feet no nerve pain but in the past 2 years it has gotten worse and it's like I walking on bubble Wrap and it throws my balance off. If your nerve test came back negative I don't think you have Neuropathy?
I wish you luck I was thinking of going to Mayo Clinic for answers if anyone would know what to do they would.

Hello @darj, welcome to Connect. I can only imagine how frightening and frustrating these symptoms must be. Other members on this site have repeatedly said that the best thing you can do is continue your quest for a diagnosis and to not give up.

I am inviting @upnorthnancy, @dolan, and @mollyb1968 who all have osteopenia and may be able to share whether or not they have had any feelings of their feet feeling of tight skin, or tight and achy legs that gives them trouble controlling them when they walk or stand.

@darj, you mentioned that you have had 3 nerve tests. When they conducted those tests, were they checking for peripheral neuropathy? If so, was that ruled out?

Hello @rossgerami1940, Welcome to Connect. I think you have asked a question that all of us have asked at one time or another - what can I do for relief for my feet with neuropathy. I think the answer may be a little different for everyone suffering from neuropathy due to the types of neuropathy and the different symptoms. Myself and others have shared our neuropathy journey and what has helped in the following discussion:

Member Neuropathy Journey Stories: What's Yours?: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/member-neuoropathy-journey-stories-whats-yours/

I think one thing that helps is exercise. You might find some tips in the following discussions:
-- Neuropathy & Exercise: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/neuropathy-exercise/
-- Water Exercise for Peripheral Neuropathy: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/water-exercise-for-peripheral-neuropathy/
-- Peripheral Neuropathy - Stretching and Exercise: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/peripheral-neuropathy-stretching-and-exercise/

Did your doctor or neurologist suggest any treatments after you were diagnosed with the nerve test?

Dear darj - I am so interested in your post about your feet and legs discomfort, with the pads of the feet feeling stiff and your legs feeling like they are in a vice grip. It's the closest description I have read so far. The pads of my feet feel like leather and when I srunch my toes they feel stiff. My legs have a sensation of tightness or swelling, but there is no swelling. So peculiar!!! You have been to all the doctors - that was helpful to hear, but on the downside, no one seems to know what the heck these symptoms are!!! I thought maybe there were associated with taking statins, so I called the manufacturer of Pravastatin. However, no helpful comments were given, but they said they appreciate me reporting the symptoms and that someone would contact me by email (at some point). It really is bizzare. It has become more noticeable in the past 6 to 9 months. I have been taking a statin for 1 year. I hope someone who has our symptoms and has gotten help, will comment on our posts. PS My GP said back pain can skip the thighs, and travel to the calves and feet (sigh) This is another scenario. Very best to you!! d.
