Psoriasis on scalp and neck

Posted by tcokeefe @tcokeefe, Feb 20, 2021

Almost a year ago I started having itching behind my right ear which I thought was a bug bite. Long story short the entire back of my scalp and nape of my neck have horrible itching. I went to my GP twice and she sent me to my dermatologist who said it looked like psoriasis. She prescribed clobetasol propionate shampoo. I am to use it until the itching stops and then I must stop using it for at least as many days or weeks as I used it and I know there is a maximum of four weeks that you can use it at any one time. My problem is the itching starts up immediately after I stop using it. I have tried coal tar shampoo, and the other kind of shampoo which name I can’t remember right now. Basically I’ve tried everything that I’ve read is recommended for psoriasis of the scalp. Anyone have any good ideas and also, how long has anyone used that steroid shampoo? Thanks for any input!

Hi @roshanbilal1966, welcome. I moved your question to this existing discussion so you can connect with other members like @rashida @tcokeefe and @jamesbmakos. They may have some treatment experiences to share with you as well.

Roshanbilal, have you been diagnosed with psoriasis? How long have you had these symptoms?

I am certainly not giving medical advice, but I did read in Dr. Andrew Weil‘s website that he recommends a three month regimen of milk thistle and I evening Primrose oil twice a day. I did do it pretty religiously for a few months And I have to say it did seem to clear up quite a bit. Now I stopped taking it and it’s back. Going to start taking it again. Google his name and psoriasis and the article should come up with dosages

@roshanbilal1966 I hope you are seeing a dermatologist.

I started out on eight 2.5mg Methotrexate once a week (5mg. Folic Acid the other six days) and although it took six months my psoriasis cleared up! It was wonderful!

Unfortunately I have fatty liver disease so my dermatologist didn’t want me to stay on the high dose and he suggested I gradually reduce the dosage to as low as I could go. At four 2.5 Methotrexate a week, the psoriasis on my head at the base of my neck and forehead hairline came back with a vengeance!

Since I cannot stay on the high dose of Methotrexate the next course of action was to start me on Stelara every twelve weeks and continue with two 2.5mg Methotrexate (and the 5mg Folic Acid rest of week) but that did not budge the psoriasis so the Stelara dosage has been increased to 90ml. and I am still taking two 2.5mg. Methotrexate once a week (5mg. Folic Acid rest of week). No positive results after two 90ml. Injections.

Dermatologist has said to wait and see if the 90ml Stelara will take effect after a few more doses and if not he will try something else. In the meantime he has prescribed Dovobet gel (comes in a red box) and that has almost cleared the psoriasis on my scalp. I have even started applying it to my elbow and although it is not working as well as it does on my scalp, I am seeing just a little improvement (less scaling) so I am going to continue till hopefully it will clear.

I lived on a farm half of my life then I moved to town. With in 6 months things went bad. 30 years later this is what I have found to help
Whole house water filter
Water softener
Skin Safe Mayo web site they gave me.
Allergies many test for chemicals, dyes and so
Found a shampoo that helps a lot
Wash hair once not two times. My hair feels better
Shampoo and conditioner in one. It works. First time my head felt so much better.
Wishing you all the best.

@roshanbilal1966 - An update since I last posted in June 2021, I was switched from Stelara to Skyrizi injections since Stelara didn’t work, still with no results after about eighteen months on each, so my dermatologist has put me on Bimzelx injections. My skin started clearing two weeks after my first injection! Started with monthly injections for five months, and now am taking the injection every eight weeks. My skin is still clear! The only side effect I have is fatigue for ten days to two weeks after taking the injection. Not a bad trade off!
