A question for all you Smoothie experts

Posted by artist01 @artist01, May 25, 2021

As a newbie Smoothie maker, can I add acidic fruits such as oranges or pineapple to a smoothie that contains dairy products, or will it curdle the mixture? Also, can I add frozen spinach (or even other veggies) to a fruit smoothie, to get more vitamins? Being deprived of so much in my diet right now, smoothies seem to be working for me!

Yes, we regularly add oranges, grapefruit & pineapple to smoothies. I am not such a huge fan of veggies in them, but my kids do it all the time - I limit mine to carrots & beets (I keep lightly cooked ones in the freezer & toss in.)
I use one scoop of Garden of Life Vanilla organic Protein + Greens per smoothie for a boost - I have settled on this because it doesn't have any objectionable (to me) flavor or smell, is widely available on line and in grocery, Target, etc
We make a blenderful at a time (2 days for 2 of us) and fill & cover glasses for the fridge - when we travel we pre-chill or pre-freeze in recycled Glucerna bottles and toss in the cooler for a "car snack".
Cup of Greek yogurt, 3-4 cups fruit & veggies of choice (incl banana for sweetness), cup of unsweetened fruit or veg juice (cherry, coconut, cranberry, grape, even V-8 or oatmilk) and 3-4 scoops of protein powder. I keep a bag of frozen mixed fruit in the freezer for if I run out of fresh.
Sometimes I spoon some into custard cups and partly freeze - my grands think they're eating ice cream - but they're non-dairy so I use coconut-milk yogurt.

@sueinmn Fantastic suggestions, Sue! There's so much I need to learn about making Smoothies. Having a bag of frozen mixed fruit on hand is an excellent idea, as well as being able to add those veggies. I'll try all your tips, for sure! Thanks so much. Hugs, Laurie

I just consulted my copy of the "Mayo Clinic Diet", and there are no smoothie recommendations within that publication 🙁

@sueinmn Thanks so much, Sue, for all that good advice. I'll be checking out the smoothie recipes on Google, and I've already googled the Garden of Life protein powder. Alas, though, when I read the "warning" on the back label, it states not to use it if immunocompromised. That's me. Disappointing, to say the least. If anyone knows of a safe boosting-type powder I could use in a smoothie, I'd love to hear from you. Not too much potassium either, my doctor says.

Hi

Most of these protein or supplement powders have warning labels on the back. My collagen powder (Livewell) has such a label.

I would suggest that you not be too concerned about these supplements right now. If you start combining the right veggies and fruits in your smoothies you may be getting all you need, especially if you drink them on a daily basis. Give yourself time and you will become a smoothie queen and may not need any more of a boost . Sometimes we rely too much on supplements and there are so many out there.

Concentrate on the best nutritional smoothie for now.

@imallears Hi Mary. Thankyou! Your post made me feel much more relaxed about NOTusing a boosting supplement powder for now. Good advice! I'm a little worried about not using veggies in my smoothies right now, but I'm planning on buying carrots, etc, and I've got frozen spinach (unused, so far). I'll get there yet!! One of my favorite smoothies right now is canned pumpkin, banana, yogurt, cinnamon, lactose-free 2% milk, etc. Really good. Hugs from The Smoothie Queen. 🤣

Yes, but what frightens me is that you’ll soon be describing in gruesome detail all about it.
But I recommend you not eat any raw creatures. I tried sashimi once but that mistake in judgment will definitely never happen again.
