Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@ess77 Hi Elizabeth. I love to hear of all your bird visitors, and even the "yucky cute squirrels"! I hope you manage to post some pictures of all of them. I was going to write and tell you those little white headed guys are chickadees, but you beat me to it. We have them here too, and I'm very fond of them. Good luck at Mayo tomorrow. It sounds exhausting, all the plans you want to carry out. Don't forget to ration your spoons as much as you can! Look whose talking - I'm the WORST at overdoing it and then having a two-day setback. 😉 Take care, Elizabeth. X0 Laurie

Good evening! I actually got out for 2 walks today. It was rainy and cold this morning so we only went for a short walk and came home. I had a headache and hate this weather so I put my bathrobe on over my clothes and worked on the computer. Then the sun came out at 4:30 so Poppy and I went back out! I think we’ll have sun tomorrow. Yeah!

I walked from Gonda building where I spent the day in tests and on the way to the hotel, the tulips were profusely blooming, people sitting outside . I walked with an MD from twin cities who had brought a friend up for brain surgery and talked about how he was just ‘marveling’ at Mayo when his friend was waving out the hospital window at him today. I agreed, it’s the home of miracles.

Walked that walk many times... Mayo is indeed a place for hope and the home of miracles. Best wishes for good news on your tests. ☺️

I walked 2 miles yesterday and today. My legs are aching. Probably need to walk more and get them in better shape. What a horrible thought. The only thing I like to exercise is my jaw. It got a workout yesterday. I made swiss steak, at least that's what call it. I browned the steak and dumped some canned tomatoes in and a bunch of sliced onions. I thought about adding some of those bite-size potatoes that come in all colors but I didn’t know if that was permissible so I didn’t do it. I had wild rice and asparagus to go with it. Candy for dessert, what else. Gotta go I hear the ice cream truck coming. Yummy!!!

Glad you are walking and cooking. Just curious as to how long you cooked the swiss steak after you dumped the tomatoes and onions and did you like it? I bet you ran to the ice cream truck. How was the view?

@imallears
Cooked it for 2 hours. It was thick. Very tender and not bad.
Yep, I ran Lickety-split to the ice cream truck. My legs weren't so sore after all.
Tomorrow I'm going to start eating 2 veggies, 1 green & 1 colored.

I have never heard of granulated garlic have you? I saw it in a recipe.

Hi Jake - you can see it here. It's in the spice section at any larger supermarket. I usually keep it on hand in the door of the freezer in case we run out of fresh garlic.
