What's outside of your picture window today?

Posted by John, Volunteer Mentor @johnbishop, Nov 25, 2020

As we get ready for the real winter to show up and COVID-19 still playing a major part in our lives I like to spend moments of my day de-stressing about what's going on in the world today. All I have to do is look out the window and observe some of natures beautiful creatures, how they interact and ponder how small it makes my troubles seem. Sometimes I may even get the opportunity to take a photo or two. How about you? Anything going on outside of your window(s) that you want to share?

For those members that have the ability to size your photos before you upload them to the discussion, may I suggest using the following sizes:
– 500 x 335 pixels (landscape)
– 210 x 210 pixels (square)

I love all sorts of varmints but the bears are a little close for comfort. Looks like mama duck has quite a job with all those kids.

Saw my first bluebird return yesterday and also had a special treat a few minutes ago when I was lining up for a shot on a female cardinal through my window. Still waiting for Woody Woodpecker to show up 🙂 I've seen him hopping from tree to tree but he's enjoying insects too much for a bird feeder landing.

Oh, John, you've given me such pleasure. Every picture is wonderful. Please identify the first picture of the brown bird on your wire snowman.....don't know him. I love watching the cardinals take care of each other. They do that more than any other birds I have...feed each other. I have never seen the blue bird.....an indigo bunting???? Beautiful! Such color! Will you share where you live, what state? MN? Do the buntings come south? Amazing.....bless you for making me happy! elizabeth

Elizabeth, I think the one on the snowman feeder is a female rose breasted grossbeak - https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mcvmagazine/issues/2017/jan-feb/birding-grosbeaks-in-Minnesota.html. The cardinals are fun watching them take care of each other. The blue bird is an indigo bunting. I don't see them too often but they are a favorite. I live in southern Minnesota not far from the Mayo Clinic.

I saw my first robin when out on my walk yesterday. That's a sure sign of Spring in these parts. Does anyone remember the poem about the robin caught in a snowstorm,
"And what will the robin do then, poor thing? He'll go to a tree, sit himself down, and hide his head under his wing, poor thing." I know I got the first 8 words of that second line wrong. Anybody remember?
