Partially collapsed lung

Posted by Juliette @marshall8318, Apr 25, 2021

Anyone experience a partially collapsed lung? I am 47, never smoker and diagnosed with Stage IIIa NSCLC December of 2019. I had a lobectomy last April and was surprised to find out two weeks ago at my 3 month scan my lung had partially collapsed a year after surgery. I knew something wasn’t quite right before scans but was not expecting that news. Had an X-Ray last week and no improvement yet. Was told it can take a long time to heal.

Searching for Partially Collapsed Lung info.
Husband had LL Lobectomy 12/2023. 10/2024 CT scan Findings include Bibascilar subsegmental atelectasis , no effusions . He has no noticeable breathing problems. Is this common following resection? Can this wait for pulmonologist appt end of 1/2025?

@abob, I'm sorry to hear about your husband's findings. Did you receive these findings during a doctor's visit? What did your husband's doctor say about them?

A partially collapsed lung with no noticeable breathing problems sounds inconsistent to me based on my training as a former EMT. Still, again, I'm not an oncologist, and I don't know your husband's medical history. I recommend calling your doctor with your questions first thing in the morning.

Good luck! I wouldn't worry for now since he's not having any breathing problems.

Hi @abob , I've found that my doctors sometimes have a slightly different interpretation of the scans than the radiologist. The doctor knows his case the best and should be able to tell you if they need to see him sooner. I would call his doctor's office to clarify what you are reading in the report. Is this the first scan where they have mentioned "Bibascilar subsegmental atelectasis" or any reference to collapsed lung?

Thx for your reply. Heard from oncology rn today, not concerning. However she did forward report to Pulmonologist with notation, and we should hear back tomorrow.
