Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI)

I have had four uti’s in the last eight months. Of those eight, I had three in three months. I’m wondering if I should see a specialist. I like my primary care provider but he is very busy. Also, if you know of anything I can be doing until my next appointment with my primary care provider, which is three months away.

Hello again,
My dad never had any side effects. If memory serves he took 500-1,000mg 4 times a day. His urologist told him to take vitamin C with it to keep the iron acidic. If I remember that converts it to formaldehyde and ammonia and keeps the ph in balance. Cranberry juice works too but get the unsweetened. Although it has hasn’t scientifically been proven to prevent urinary track infection there is something in it that helps keep the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. Whether that’s beneficial or not I wouldn’t know. Drink lots of water too. I never alternative is lemon juice. I’ve had 8 kidney stones and my urologist said lemonade is the gold standard in preventing them. It definitely would keep your urine acidic.
That’s all I can remember now besides it’s time for a candy bar break.

Thank you so much Jake. I appreciate your kindness in responding. I will take mine with the Vitamin C supplement. I drink 2 plus quarts of water per day but, the lemonade sounds much better along with the candy bar! God bless.

Just one more thing. You don’t need to take very much vitamin C. 100mg is plenty but you might ask your doctor to be sure.

Does anyone have any safety information on the medication Methenamine Mandelate for UTI prevention? Does it work and how long can you safely use it?

How long have you been experiencing UTIs and/or UTI symptoms? I am assuming that you are wanting to take the medication longer than originally prescribed, is that right?

I have for years years chronic UTIS. The UTIS are 95% rare bacteria. My primary doctor and Uro Doctor take urine tests, give me antibiotic and most time when culture comes back with wrong antibiotic treatment and I start over with another medicine. I had 4 utis last year starting in May and then every other month another uti through November 2021. I have an unobstructed 3mm kidney stone and read an medical article that a woman had a 4mm and chronic Utis. Her Doc ignored her pleas to remove it just in case it may tbe what is causes her utis. Finally he gave in and did it and her utis stopped. Conclusion, kidney stone was infected and the uti meds were not killing that infection. Doctor said, he will listen more closely when his patients bring information to him pertaining to their health issue. I approached my doctor and the only response was, "Do you know how small 3mm stone is"? Gave me script that may help prevent uti. Nope, waste of time. I want to go to the Mayo and get help. I'm at my wits end. Please, can anyone guide me in the right direction. Thanks Kathy.

Welcome to Connect.
I'm sorry but I really cannot help with this. I had my first ever UTI about 20 years ago but since then I have only had some episodes that were thought to be UTIs but were not, and then I had botox treatment two times for incontinence and both times that caused a UTI. So, despite having had a couple of UTIs I am really not much help.

I recommend you make an appointment asap with a board certified urologist. This physician specializes in UTI's and will help to diagnosis the problem.
