Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Now your going nuts about a pine tree. I guess we all are nuts about something. I go nuts over my duckie friends.

Ginger - Turtle pace is great, as you say, for really seeing what is out there. I have always been a Type-A walker, reluctant to slow down, but health issues and the desire to walk with husband and friends whose abilities differ has led me to appreciate the time to stop and notice. So now I have days when I walk to see the world thoroughly and days when I WALK for exercise - used to run, but alas, no more.

Sue, you can walk!!!! And you do every day possible, often more than one time daily. You walk, lady! You are admirable, pat yourself on the rear-end and get going some more. I think you all deserve a star on your forehead, just like firesty76 said.
I've been getting some good comments and discussions from my doctors recently. My testing results are all improved. I am going for an endoscopy to balloon the Schazti Ring that sometimes stops my water swallow or food from going beyond my mid-sternum. Then, I'm through with everything internal for awhile....only hearing aids and glasses w/prisms....still don't have them due to autoimmune issues in both ears and eyes. I'm getting those worked through, so will get going on the hearing/seeing solutions in week after endo.

I think I just have more normal, follow-up visits unless some need arises.

PCP ordered heated therapy pool PT to resume after endo. the 3rd.! I'm thrilled. Seems, I'm better than in years now, have to get the body able to move and get going.....so, scheduled walks with the pool and I'm again on the way to improving health, breathing, overall conditioning and for sure, mental health.

thanks, folks. You are all such great characters, with interesting personalities and interests and suggestions...you help others more than you realize. I thank you. Bless each of you. elizabeth

Hello, Laurie. Yep, I do love that walker. I looked long and hard for something that made my statement about life and being forced to use a walker!

Finally, thanks to @sunnyflower who had just gotten this one. It is a bit smaller, lighter, easier for me to handle and get in/out of car. I keep it in the car since it's light enough for me if I need it.

It really is hot pink, with a Zebra black/white striped bag and seat. I'm still looking for a bottle/drink holder to attach that will fit. Have one on the other walker I have, but not found anything to work yet. I use the basket pockets for sunglasses, water bottle, stuff. A very good thing.
Blessings to you and hope every day is better that the previous day....elizabeth

@ess77 Hi Elizabeth! Thankyou for that bolstering message, which I'm replying to you from the wilds of Canada! Yes, if it were not for lodgepole pines, so straight, strong and tall, we would not have telephone poles. Lol.
I'll attempt to post a photo, taken from my hospital window.

@ess77 I’m so happy to hear that your doctors see some improvement with all your walking! Way to go! And you’re encouraging others to keep walking, especially me. Becky

I tried walking in town today. Not really ‘in town’ but on the edge. I wanted to stop at the fabric store and then went to Sprouts. Walked about 1.5 miles. Exhausted!

@ess77 You surely are making a statement with your hot pink walker, especially with the black and white Zebra stripes to add to the whole picture. Zowie! Good for you!! Thankyou for your good wishes, Elizabeth. Same to you.
