Effective home remedy for migraine

Posted by davidschumann @davidschumann, Aug 18, 2011

I hope to share some information that will help migraine sufferers. Perhaps someone else has already shared this information in this forum, so forgive this newbie if this is old news.

I'm 43, and I suffered for years from migraine with auras. I seem to have outgrown them, but I will never forget what they were like.

I once received a direct injection of Imitrex, and it worked well. I never tried the oral version of Imitrex. For most attacks, I used a home remedy that I have recommended to others, and they tell me it works for them as well.

When auras would appear, I would rub Ben-Gay (I imagine a different brand name of heating sports cream would also work) into my scalp, wrap a towel around my head, and sleep (if I could) in a dark room.

It worked. Every time. For years. And it has worked for others.

It did not always eliminate all the pain, but it made the pain manageable. And my pain would typically last about 3 days, during which time I had to be careful to not make sudden moves.

I can't promise it will work for you, but it is relatively risk-free. Just be sure to keep the cream away from your eyes. Even if it gets close, it can burn..

I hope this helps.

girlg: I think it was harsh light that triggered them - at least most of the time. When I was getting them most frequently in my 20s, I worked as a compositor in an old-school newspaper production office. This was just before desktop publishing was common, and I would spend hours working over light tables, cutting and pasting (with scissors and wax) the pages together. I got migraines before I took that job, and they continued after I left it, so that job wasn't the only trigger, but light (computer screens, the glare of sun on metal) seems to be a common factor in most migraines I had. I hope this helps.

curious if old-school newspaper production office job actually had produced newspapers....newspapers cause migraines for me just like fragrances/chemicals do. A doctor who was filling in for my primary md was on a special project for the medical community. He said the type of chemicals in products that I stated gave me migraines is the most common triggesr for migraines. He has moved on so I don't hear the latest updates any more 🙁 I thank you for your time. Take care
