"Electric Shock" type pain in my scalp!

Posted by Deby @deby, Aug 17, 2011

It feels like someone is touching my scalp with an electric wire or prod. Like a "zap" and then it takes a few seconds to get over it. It happens 2 or more times per MINUTE! It lastes for a couple of days usually and when it goes away it takes a few more days for my scalp not to be sore. I don't know how many times a year it occurs but when it does, like today, it drives me crazy. I walk around making weird faces and people stare at me. They think I have a headache or migrain but I don't, the pain is only on my scalp not IN my head. Sometimes the shocks occur over and over for a minute, then go back to 2 or more times per minute. It's the weirdest thing and I can't wait for it to be over. I never know when it's going to occur or what brings it on. Anyone ever heard of something like this?

I had it for awhile talked to my doctor he suggested first thing to try I Alleve. I took this for one week two times daily and it went away. He said if that doesn't work there are other fixes. Worked for me.

I started having excruciating shocks to the left side of my throat. Found out by accident that they were caused from the Lycopene in baby asparagus and solanine in heirloom tomatoes. Think they may have been interacting with one of my other meds. Anyway, quit eating them and the shocks went away the next day, never to return. Hope this can help someone!

Hi. I had the same symptoms as well. I've been having this for the past few years but not often. Today i was alarmed by the "zap" or pinching feeling at the upper left side of my head that i had to stop walking or touch that part of my head because it hurts. And it last only for a few seconds and then comes back again. For days it'll go off then come back again. I really want to know if this is serious or what. I don't really wanna go check a neurologist cause i don't know if I'm scared or over reacting.

My daughter is still having these issues.. She did get a mri which turned up nothing which believe me I was freaking out myself.. She has her medical marijuana because that is the only thing that has helped.. I have always been by the book kinda of person but I changed my mind.. If I was you I would talk to your doctor then see where that goes.. You are not over reaching.. Do what you think is best for you

Do you still have these symptoms? This very thing happens to me and if I explain it to people, they say it’s just in my head. Also, my face and forehead get very very red and I get this burning sensation.

Identical symptoms just started. One spot on my head I cannot touch without the shock reaction. Have a regular doctor appt Monday will talk to him.

What did your doctor say?

Years ago my wife had similar shock like feelings in her scalp. They would last for just a short periods of time. Most doctors diagnosed this to be a mental condition. Fortunately after three months of doctoring a nutritionist diagnosed this as hypoglycemia which is a drastic swing in sugar levels in the body. Apparently this causes other organs to react abnormally and to release chemicals into the blood stream that caused the shock like feelings in the scalp. I'm not saying that your condition is a result of hypoglycemia but it may be due to a similar chemical reaction that is causing your symptoms. What my wife went through was very scary but fortunately the cure was simple.........a proper diet.
