"Electric Shock" type pain in my scalp!

Posted by Deby @deby, Aug 17, 2011

It feels like someone is touching my scalp with an electric wire or prod. Like a "zap" and then it takes a few seconds to get over it. It happens 2 or more times per MINUTE! It lastes for a couple of days usually and when it goes away it takes a few more days for my scalp not to be sore. I don't know how many times a year it occurs but when it does, like today, it drives me crazy. I walk around making weird faces and people stare at me. They think I have a headache or migrain but I don't, the pain is only on my scalp not IN my head. Sometimes the shocks occur over and over for a minute, then go back to 2 or more times per minute. It's the weirdest thing and I can't wait for it to be over. I never know when it's going to occur or what brings it on. Anyone ever heard of something like this?

My pain and symptoms went away. Not sure why but not complaining. The only thing I did is take Advil and Gabapentin for nerve pain for about 7 days then weaned my way off until pain was gone. I went ahead with the MRI anyway and haven’t heard back on an interpretation yet. The Dr said I didn’t have the symptoms of neuropathy. I had no numbness or dizziness. So...I had one massage and one cranial sacral treatment. Not sure what helped. Definitely thing it was stress or anxiety related and I have been trying to keep my neck from getting too stiff by sitting in front of a computer all day. I hope this helps someone.

I’ve got the zapping pain in my scalp going on also. It is so severe it makes me wince from the pain. It doesn’t last long, but my scalp is tender afterwards.

I have the same problem. I just got over an episode that lasted about 5 days. It keeps me up all night when it happens. The only thing I’ve found that helps is Extra Strength Tylenol about every 4 hours. I last had it happen 4 months ago. Both my primary physician & my neurologist say it’s from my sinuses. But I don’t think they understand the type of pain. The sharp shooting pain causes me to make a face & grab the spot. It stops but I know it will come again soon. Mine usually starts in my ear. Then it will move to the top of my scalp, the side of my scalp, the base of my skull. It just comes on suddenly. I have no idea why. Help!!

Said it was probably trimingal neuralgia. Not sure of spelling. Take Alleive for a few days if that doesn't work would have to try another thing. It worked took alleve generic after two days gone. Kept taking for 1 week hasn't returned.
