Wad of broken cartilage in nose after a fall, and broken bone also.

Posted by conniegh @conniegh, Oct 4, 2020

Is it possible to remove the wad of cartilage in my nose.. the upper lateral cartilage got a bit fractured (wasted actually) along with the bone being broken. I had no treatment, just figured things would heal. But I noticed the wad of cartilage up at the top a few months ago. The fall and fractures occurred 10 months ago. I had lovely purple raccoon bruising around both eyes.

It makes it hard to pick my nose on that side ..ha ha.. I am hoping I can have it removed but worry about the skin caving in. My nose is deviated a slight bit to the right.

Thanks for any help on this.

Hello @conniegh, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. When I looked at Mayo Clinic's page for a broken nose one of things it mentions under when to see a doctor is a noticeable change in the shape of your nose that isn't related to swelling, such as a crooked or twisted appearance, also breathing difficulties.

I think it's good to be concerned about the cartilage. Have you thought about seeing a Ear, Nose & Throat specialist to see what they recommend? Does the cartilage move around or hurt when you touch your nose?

I did finally get an ENT surgical appointment the end of this month.

The wad doesn't move and isn't painful. Just pressure on the bone above the cartilage

@conniegh, great that you make an appointment with an ENT specialist to explore your options. @rhondah or @nrd1 may have some thoughts for this discussion. Connie, what questions do you want to ask at your upcoming appointment? Have you started a list?
