Retina growth causing blindness - Need advice

Vision in one of my eyes is deteriorating quickly due to a tissue growth covering the retina. My vision has gone from 20/20 to 20/65 (corrected) over the past 9 months. My doctor is recommending surgery to remove the tissue but indicates that there is a 30% chance that the surgery could damage the retina making the vision even worse. Additionally, it is not possible to predict how much the vision will be improved if the surgery is successful. If anyone who has had this problem and had the surgery can provide input as to the results I would appreciate it.
