START THE DISCUSSION in prep for Nov 30 teleconference
I would like to share my thoughts in regard to item #5. Ideas, Inspirations and Innovations - What resource, tool or support would like to have to help you in your role as a Mentor?
I think that this is a technology issue?
I understand the rationale for having the posts listed First to Last, so that a person can read all posts as they evolve. However it is difficult to locate a new entry when is placed in the middle of a discussion.
An example is when viewing the Trending Posts on the Opening Page. or when I see a re-activated forum within a discussion group (the one that rises to the top of the list). Lets say I see a topic of interest that was posted XXmin ago, and then I click on it, I cannot easily locate the most recent post that was referenced post of XXmin ago. This is a big deal when it is a long forum. I know that I can receive e-mail notifications for my preferential groups, however I like the option of checking in on other topics now and then.
Is it possible to add a "newest" or "most recent" in addition to the "First" and "Last" options to the beginning of the forum?
I admit, I get frustrated with a multipage forum if I have to scroll through each page.
Rosemary

Hi Rosemary,
We will be adding the ability for you to sort a thread from oldest to newest (chronological order) or from newest to oldest (reverse chronological order). However, this does not solve the issue of finding the a reply to a reply. What does that mean!?

Connect uses a threaded view structure for our discussions. Have you noticed how some replies are indented where others are not? It works like this.

Unthreaded views mean there are no replies to replies. Messages appear according to their timestamp only, meaning chronologically or reverse chronologically.

That's the explanation, perhaps only somewhat satisfying. However, I would like to address your excellent suggestion of making the Trending posts more useful. When someone clicks on the trending posts on the homepage or on the groups directory page, they should be taken directly to the last posted message (regardless of where it appears in the discussion thread). I have submitted this request to the IT development team.

I really like your Trending posts request Colleen. That would make things a lot easier to find.

Thanks Colleen for looking into this. Rosemary

I'm happy to report that the trending post request has been accepted. I'll let you know when this new functionality will be available.

What this means:
On the homepage https://connect.mayoclinic.org/, there is a row of card showing the last 4 active discussions. If you click VIEW ALL then you can see all the recent active threads https://connect.mayoclinic.org/groups/#cap-6171
Currently if you click one of these discussion threads, you get taken to the first message. In the updated version you will be taken directly to the latest message that was posted. Yippee!

Thanks for making this request @rosemarya !

I'm sorry to have missed parts of the teleconference. I listened to it starting at 30 minutes in, but never could get my computer into the meeting. To begin with, it took 40 minutes just to boot. At least I heard some of the changes being made. Thank you for your leadership and clear communication.

Jim

@jimhd

We missed you, Jim. I'm sorry you had so many technical problems!

Teresa

Sorry that you missed parts of the teleconference, Jim. You can catch up on what you missed by watching and listening to the recording here: http://cc.callinfo.com/play?id=b2hw1b

I wanted to circle back on this tangential conversation about threaded views, etc. Working with the designers and developers, we have decided that a non-threaded or flat view will be better for the Connect community. (finally). This will make is much easier to follow the discussions as threads will all be chronological and each person can decide whether to see the threads from oldest to newest or newest to oldest.

This also means we can deleiver on Rosemary's request to have trending posts jump to the most recent post. Also it will look better on mobile devices. I look forward to showing the prototype to you as we move forward with the design and development.

I think that is a good plan if you were looking for comments. If not, never mind and just chalk it up as more from the peanut gallery. I really think it will make it easier not to repeat something already said. I have also felt at times that I was probably very late to the party and any further discussion was sort of irrelevant.

@gman007, This is when the "Like" button comes in handy:-) These tech issues are way over my thinking, too!
