Originally identified as a respiratory disease, some COVID-19 patients exhibit neurologic symptoms including stroke, loss of consciousness, headache, and even the loss of taste and smell. What's unknown is whether these are direct effects of the virus entering the nervous system, or consequences of the disease's effect on the body.

On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Allen Aksamit Jr., a Mayo Clinic neurologist, discusses potential neurological effects of COVID-19.

To practice safe social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, this interview was conducted using video conferencing. The sound and video quality are representative of the technology used.

Very Informative presentation, will incorporate when teaching my patients

Dr. Allen Aksamit's neurological podcast was informative. In the last 3 minutes of his presentation he mentioned a peripheral neuropathy syndrome which I could not understand his pronounciation or spelling. Phonetically it sounded like " e'" on barese" syndrome. Please let me know the correct spelling. I have peripheral neuropathy and during my recent 'viral infection' I had increased loss of sensation in my feet up to my knees. Thank you .

@lovee Here's an excerpt from Dr. Aksamit's video starting at 10:26.
"Well there's a lot of things that you may hear about that will be associated with COVID-19 that are not so well publicized. There have been a few patients who have had Guillain-Barre syndrome. You may know that condition. It's a neurological syndrome that affects the peripheral nerves. That one has been now reported in a few patients. It seems to be not a direct infection of the nerves but rather an immune reaction against the nerves."
