What are your accommodation recommendations when coming to Mayo?

Hi, we have stayed in many places during our numerous visits to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, for staying close to the clinic with underground access to everything around including the clinic, we like the "Kayler Inn and Suites" the rooms are large and include a kitchenette, its clean and rooms are updated,the prices are reasonable in comparaison to other similar accommodations that are connected to the underground passages, in the downtown area.

Stay away from the Staybridge out on Commerce Drive. Bad management and rooms and common areas are often not cleaned well as well as Pet rooms not deep cleaned after guests with pets well. Also they offer different rates for the same room same days and unless you demand it they dont offer the Mayo clinic discount even if they know you are a patient or patients family. You have to ask for it and triple check to make sure you have it. Pool chemicals are also often off either low chlorine or so high it bleaches your suits.
We stayed there for almost 3 months , this is one Id avoid.

At the Rochester location. My mom, and I stay at the Kahler Inn & Suites. It is within easy access by subway level to the clinic. Not sure about the price as my mom pays for it. But, I like staying there. So, does my mom because when I had my two hip replacement surgeries. The hotel was very good about extending her stay in the room. We'll be back at Kahler from the 28th-30th. I have appointments with my doctors there.

Last year when we were there. The manager was really nice about letting us keep a clinic wheelchair in the hotel room. Like the one in my profile picture. That's never happened before during the times I would bring my walker only. All of the other times. I brought my manual wheelchair.

@50surgeries, Good Morning! Welcome to Connect. Your cheerful post has made me smile as I, too, can recall the kindness of the Rochester "locals" toward the needs of patients. When I have stayed at the motels near the clinic, I am amazed by the number of wheelchairs lined up in the hallways. This is not something that one normally sees in a motel, is it?

Seeing the clinic wheelchairs all lined up at the hotel where my mom, and I stay was something I had to get used to seeing when we first came to Rochester.

My life has revolved around speciality hospitals from birth as I was born with Apert Syndrome. It’s a rare syndrome that causes fusion of the bones in the hands, feet, and face. I’ve had fifty surgeries from birth to age 31. I’m 37 now.

My mom, and I have a favorite restaurant to eat at while we are there. Victoria’s. Their food is so good. We also like to hang out in the Gonda Building atrium, and listen to whoever is playing the piano.

Speaking of that. I’ve heard of a group called the Gonda Singers, and have seen their videos on YouTube. Do you know when the’ll be performing. I’ve heard there was a big controversy about them singing in the atrium because of the loudness.

Do you know if they still perform, and when? My mom, and I would love to hear them when we’re at Mayo, and we’re only there for the 29th, and the 30th.

@tanasmeme21 Hi and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Will you be heading to Mayo-Rochester? You didn’t say, but coming from OK, I would think that’s where you’re heading. Also, how long is your visit? If it’s longer term for treatment there are also extended stay motels, airbnb, VRBO homes, and charitable houses such as Gift of Life Transplant house, etc..
There’s no shortage of lodging near the Clinic in Rochester. Many hotels, restaurants and stores are directly connected to the clinic via the ‘subway’, which is an underground, climate controlled walkway system. My husband and I had to live in Rochester for almost 5 months during my medical treatment so I’m very familiar with the area around the clinic. We lived at the Marriott Residence Inn which is about 2 blocks from the clinic. It has inside parking and an outdoor lot. Again, that hotel is connected to the subway and leads directly to Mayo Clinic.

I’m more than happy to answer any questions about the clinic and the area. Will you be driving? Driving or flying, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the ease in which you can reach the clinic! Rochester is super easy to get around, parking can be a challenge. But everything is geared around the clinic so it is front and center to everything. Lori.
