Sample sounds for hearing aid adjustments?

@coppermoon, I agree. The hearing aid manufacturers boast how well their newest products are the best in the world for cancelling background noise, yet we still struggle with understanding speech in noise. We say "prove it", yet the audiologists do not try to simulate real world conditions in their offices. We are told to use the products and come back if there are problems. So, we go to a party and the aids fail miserably. We go for a reprogramming and are asked to try again. By the time we get to another social function, the 30 day trial period has expired. We are stuck with them without being able to try another brand. But, with any brand, we end up with the same problem. The manufacturers need to give us more control of the hearing aids to better adjust for different listening environments. We need not fall for their advertising gimmicks.

@tonyinmi - this baffles me. When testing my new hearing aids I've had to ask my audiologist to read something to me, to jingle her keys, to drop something heavy and open and close her desk drawers. I've now started playing music on my phone. Once I even made her go outside with me so I could stand by the road and hear the traffic. I told my audiologist I can tell if new aids are going to work as soon as I get in my vehicle and turn the radio on.

I even asked her (jokingly, but serious) if there was a way I could use her office (when they were closed) to just sit and play with the settings MYSELF. Why can't we have the software and the hardware to make the adjustments ourselves? It's exhausting trying to explain the sounds I'm having issues with.....

"Does it sound like you're in a tunnel? Under water? Is there an echo? Is it the S's or the P's? Does it sound like a screeching noise or more like a sharp sound? Is it the bass or the treble? Is it just in your left ear or both? If I change this, is it better or worse? "
