Are Brain Tumors Heredity?

Hello @hussain Welcome to Mayo Connect. I'm not a medical professional at all, but from what I know yours is not an easy question to answer. From what I have read sometimes genetics can be an influence, maybe give someone a predisposition, or also have no effect with some diseases, it varies greatly and depends on what the disease, etc. might be.

Do you know what kind of tumor it was?

Thanks for the reply, @hussain My wife had a brain tumor and I can say the type she had was not the type that is genetically passed on and our adult children, and their children, have no health problems like that.

Again, I'd say the entire issue of genetic predisposition and heredity is a very complex one. Plus it is evolving very quickly as many new scientific discoveries are constantly being made.

I'd suggest that if this is a concern for you that you ask your doctor for her or his opinion about your specific health situation and genetics, etc.

@hussain good morning. My sister was diagnosed with two meningiomas about 4 years ago and the following year I was diagnosed with a meningioma. Different places different sizes. She is about 4 years younger than me. I have asked if it is hereditary but there are no definite answers. My children so far show no tumors (they had MRIs to check). It is a good question though. I think it depends on what type of tumor, your body, and possibly how we eat??? Not sure as I am not a professional just someone who will be having surgery in April to hopefully remove it. You are in the right spot for answers though!! Good Luck.

supposedly only a very small percentage of brain tumors are hereditary however there are risk factors that can increase the probability.
As far as my family history goes, my Dad's father had a brain tumor and died at age 42 as a result. My dad had a brain tumor at age 42 that was successfully removed with post-surgical complications requiring additional surgery and other problems that stayed with him for life. His Mom also had a tumor successfully removed. Also my brother's grandson had a tumor removed at 15. Not wanting to take any chances when I turned 42 I demanded an MRI which my doctor ordered.

My answer to your question at least how I think you mean it would be NO at least in my Dad's family. My dad, his dad & and the next one was my grandfather's great-great-grandchild.
Since it only happened to one of your family members I wouldn't be concerned until or if it happens. No need to worry now. Stress can induce cells to become tumors. The chance of it being generic and passed on is extremely low.
