Single Sided Hearing Loss
I'm amazed how many posts there have been lately about single sided hearing loss and think having our own thread might be beneficial. I'm missing something really important about this issue and hope someone will please help me understand it. I used to explain my hearing issue to people who asked as follows: when you have two good ears, sound comes in from both sides and your brain can select what it wants to "hear". When you have only one good ear, sound comes in on one side and your brain can't separate out what it wants to "hear." It's all noise. Is that right or am I totally wrong? If it is right and I get the cros hearing aid, how will moving sound from my deaf ear over to my good ear make any difference in my ability to hear? Sound is still going in one side and will still be noise. I understand that if I need the bicros hearing aid, it will pick up the sound from my deaf ear, move it to my good ear and enhance the ability to hear in my good ear. This is really complex. I'm rooting for the new technology in the article Ken sent out about growing new tiny hairs in the ears of hard of hearing people to help them hear more clearly. Thanks for helping me understand this. Nancy

@dwi. Have you checked out hearing aid availability in Thailand? I remember reading Thailand was a medical tourism destinat
Yes, I have mine cleaned and adjusted in Bangkok. They do not receive the latest aids as soon as US does, maybe a year behind. It was the same in Malaysia.
I’ve had single sided deafness since I had a cholesteatoma removed. I was evaluated for a Baha but do not have enough hearing through the bone for it to be helpful. I’ve had Phonak BiCros since they came out. They do not help with directionality so there’s much brain confusion as to where sound is coming from but they do make the sound fuller and more robust. For instance I can’t hear some sounds (a fan for instance) if I just have my hearing aid in but then when I put in my Cros I can hear it. I understand Phonak is working on a BiCros for their Paradise line of hearing aids. I’m expectantly waiting for it to come out. I noticed a huge difference between my original Cros and the abilities of my current pair that have the premium level features. The advantage of the Paradise is that they have Bluetooth in them and don’t require neck streamers. Since I use TVLink, RogerPen and streaming from my devices on a daily basis I’m looking forward to not needing the neck loop. Phonak did not come out with a Cros on their previous platform.... Marvel, so they really need to make Bluetooth work especially since other companies have the technology available.

I agree. I will not upgrade with Phonak until they have blue tooth
Where do you get the money for these? I’m sorry but I’m really ignorant to how to get these. My husband has only received two hearing aids in his life and they were very expensive. He is completely deaf in one ear, repeated removal of cholesteatomas have completely destroyed everything in that ear. His hearing ear has been reconstructed due to cholesteatomas and have prosthetic bones in it and he has partial hearing in that one.
I don’t know what hearing aids would help him but we can’t afford much. We’re both disabled.
@dwi. Have you checked out hearing aid availability in Thailand? I remember reading before I visited there that Thailand was a medical tourist destination center. I just did a google search on hearing aids there. One article said it is a medical tourist destination center for people wanting to get less expensive hearing aids. I didn't scroll down through all the articles, but Phonax hearing aids and Starky hearing aids were mentioned as being available there, along with others, I'm sure. If they didn't have the specific model you were looking for, they could probably order it for you. I don't think less expensive means inferior, but Gina @earscan can probably help with that issue. The markup in cost for exactly the same drug in the States as compared with the rest of the world is obscene. Just a thought. Nancy
Drugs and medical cost are a fraction of what it are in US. Hearing aids themselves are close to the same cost as US
@dwi. oops this got away from me before I finished it.sorry...I saw your reply below so please ignore my other post
@dwi. that's really interesting to know, thanks.
