Technology for Glucose Monitoring

Posted by JerryP @jfperrone, Jan 31, 2021

Type 2 on insulin 4 times a day. Just started using Freestyle libre remote glucose testing device. I am happy that I don't have to stick my fingers at all. The system seems to work very well with an important feature (to me); alarms. I have had a couple of severe lows in my sleep that caught me by surprise. This device monitors your preset highs and lows with warning alarms. Had I had this device it would have woken me up before it got life threatening. I suspect this system is expensive but I don't know since my insurance covered it. There are other systems out there that should be looked at if needed. IF you are a frequent tester this may be an option.

This technology may tell you where you are with diabetes, but I am curious what you are doing to make your health better. What are you eating or not eating?
I realize different people have different levels of diabetes, but I am a firm believer that the body can work better with diet and exercise changes if the system is not completely broken down. The technology is giving you the information so you can make changes to improve your condition or reverse it. Have you seen a nutritionist? I admit I have never been to the point of needing insulin except once in a hospital setting when they gave me pain medicine. I would encourage you to look at your diet, if you have not done so already. And yes, I know about low blood sugar as I suffered from it years ago. It is a dangerous situation that many do not understand. I cured that problem with diet changes and stress reduction. Dorisena

Hi 🙋‍♀️ I’m Dinah . I totally agree with Dorisena. Exercise is necessary, what you eat also plays an important part .Walking 15-20 mins , 3 times a week is good .indoor walk is also good .

@jfperrone I am a Type I diabetic (due to having pancreatic cancer). I, too, am on the FreeStyle libre. Mine only let's me know what my blood glucose is when I use a reader or an app on my phone. It's so easy I check my levels much more than 4 times a day like I did when I had to stick my finger. Another technology that I love is the insulin pump. I have the Medtronics 630G. I enter my glucose levels and how many carbs I am going to eat and it calculates how much insulin I need. And if my glucose is running high between meals, I can give myself some extra insulin which I never would have done when I was giving myself shots using the insulin pen. Yes, eating healthy and exercise is still very important for over all health, but this technology makes testing glucose levels and giving myself insulin much easier.

Hi , I also use Freestyle Libre only 1 Sensor a month > it only lasts only 2 weeks , it will go dead after that . When I have doubts about the numbers ( especially the highs n lows ) I will check with test strips to determine the accurate number .When I first try it out , it gave me ridiculous readings , n I then realise it’s was faulty , I made a complain n got a replacement. It’s an expensive device. Rgds Dinah

This picture will give those who might consider trying out the FreeStyle Libre. Sometimes Abbott will offer , buy 3 Sensors , free 1 Sensor. The piece of white round think (on the left )will be punched in on your arm , it has a small fine needle in the centre to hold the Sensor on your arm. Rgds Dinah

Knowing your numbers helps you control the amount of food you shld have during mealtime. Bottom line is , we stil need to do some light exercise, stretching is good , walking indoor or outdoor is necessary. Diabetic cannot have a Sedentary lifestyle, it’s no ! No ! Rgds Dinah

The condition and needs are usually different between type I and type !! diabetes, so no one should consider the treatments the same, I have never needed insulin and now I won't need to worry about that for the near future because my body is closer to working as it normally should. Please don't get confused with my experiences because needing insulin changes the treatment protocol. Use of testing equipment is probably more helpful with type ! .

My advice is know your body. Don't put all your trust in automation. You need to know when things don't look right and perform a manual blood test. In the short time I've had the system I returned 2 sensors for giving me readings that were clearly wrong. They replaced both. The bottom line is this is supplement to your care not the first line of defense.

Hi , I agree to what you said . I also had the Faulty Sensor replaced many times before over the period I’d 3 years . I also used the tests strips besides having the Sensor on my arm just to see the difference in the number . Sensors are convenient when you are out running errands .Rgds Dt
