Doctor said I have bursitis. he asked if my feet are numb. If they are very cold, is that numbness? have to rest until PT starts. Any more information?

Hi. I too suffer from various locations of bursitis; mostly in hips and upper arms. I fell on my left arm after breaking my leg in 4 places and now have a nagging constant pain. Topical pain meds help as well as CBD internal and as a topical but unfortunately only the steroid injection helped the most. I very tentatively exercise it daily hoping to build the muscles around it. I commuter with tour pain and hope you can find some relief. Tough stuff and I think can be a hereditary factor asl well. I have osteoarthritis a d I feel it’s kind of all in the same inflammatory family. Blessings to you

Hi Erica, Thank you very much for your kind reply. I am not taking any meds for my pain as my Dr. won't give me anything because she said that meds for the Bursitis will cause my stomach to be painful or bleed. I know I can't take aspirin or anything like this, so I am taking on my own, Tylenol for arthritis and Aleve together. They help a little, but not much and both are hard on my stomach and cause constipation. I did go to a very reputable physiotherapist and he gave me a couple of exercises to do with a stretchy band, but it really hurts to use it, but I keep on trying every day. Perhaps a cortisone shot would do me a lot of good if done by the right Dr. Thanks again and I will keep you posted as to what I end up doing.

Hello @happyat76, @erikas, @funcountess and @cyn77. I have chronic hip bursitis. I have NO knee pain. Bursitis is also called Iliotibial Band Syndrome and Trochanter Bursitis: https://www.upmc.com/services/sports-medicine/conditions/it-band-syndrome

There are some GREAT exercises to stretch the iliotibial band that really work! I just do them 3 times a day, 3 repetitions holding each for 20 seconds. You can REALLY feel the band stretching! Here are a few websites that demonstrate some exercises. I don't see mine on there exactly. Mine are easy b/c I lie flat, bend the affected knee and rotate it to the opposite unaffected side. You can feel the stretch right away. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat 3 times. Do this 3 times a day.

@maryflorida @amandajro Yes, I have bursitis in both hips. It's been a battle for years now. As I mentioned in a post in another discussion this morning, cortisone shots have helped me tremendously, but it is important to get a very skilled doctor. Too often they don't hit the exact spot and then there is no relief. I was fortunate to find a doctor, after many who missed the spot, who did get it right. If I was starting to find a doctor now for a cortisone shot I would go to a physiatrist. They are doctors of physical medicine and when they do cortisone shots they use some type of low X-ray imaging to get the shot to the exact right spot.
I am hesitating to get a shot now because I have developed advanced osteoporosis from taking prednisone. Cortisone is of course also a steroid so I fear that it may worsen my hip osteoporosis, which is the last thing I want to happen. I plan to ask my endocrinologist about that.

I think I am starting to understand! And that is exciting! I have osteoporosis in my right hip along with bursitis. My bones are loosing all the way around. To move is so painful, I have changed my eating be getting rid of flour and added a lot of pineapple and cottage cheese. Added Turmeric and tried to help relieve the pain! I have a spine pump for pain medications for my spine and now it has moved to my hips! The pain Dr is going to pull the fluid off my hip and add cortisone or (?). A hip replacement is out of the question because of the damaged bones that are not rebuilding themselves. Life is not easy some days and there is a reason. So where do I go from here? I guess what happens next? I just need to understand what is happening to my body. Thank you! Diana Leach

@diana13 I am sorry to hear of your dilemma, but hip replacements are not generally done for bursitis anyway, they are done when you have arthritis in the joint or some other conditions. I have read that hip replacements can actually trigger bursitis!

Do you think the pain is related to your osteoporosis at all? I have not found that to be a problem with pain. I am exercising a lot and I believe it has actually helped my bursitis too because it is not as bothersome as it used to be. Of course that's very important too for osteoporosis. I still have trouble lying on my side for long, or at all on a firm surface like an exercise mat. I can do it for a while in bed but then I have to turn. Some nights I feel like a rotisserie chicken, turning and turning.

The dietary changes I have made to help with my osteoporosis are adding more calcium and protein to my diet. Many people don't realize the importance of protein, but our bones are half protein so it is very important. I think turmeric is not recommended for patients on immunosuppressants so I have not used that. I am post-liver transplant.

Is the cortisone a shot or something else? Cortisone is a steroid and steroids can cause bone loss. I have been on prednisone for over 4 years now as part of my immunotherapy and it is suspected that is what caused my osteoporosis. I would love to get a cortisone shot for my bursitis but I am afraid that a shot to my hip would worsen the bones there. If you ask your pain doctor about that I would love to know what he/she says.

Do you do exercises which hurt your hip? My pain doctor told me to avoid doing the exercise bike for now. I agree with you about lying on one side and having to change sides often. So, I go to a "dry needling" pain doctor.. but not much better yet. Is there anything dlse for bursitis (or maybe it is sciatica .. they don't know for sure)?

@maryflorida I just do general exercises but I guess they apparently do something that helps. I follow YouTube exercise videos and I try to walk when possible. I don't like walking in my neighborhood because it's hilly and that bothers my bursitis but the flat trail I enjoy does not get plowed or cleared of snow so for now I can't use it.

I had sciatica in the summer of 2019 and it was quite different from bursitis for me. It went down the back of my leg and the pain was more acute. Then I spent 6 hours in a car (back and forth) driving somewhere and two hours between the going and returning sitting. The next day the pain was so severe that I actually had a pre-syncope episode which caused me to fall on my kitchen tile floor. I had a minimally displaced trochanteric femur fracture from that which then caused me to get a DEXA which is when I discovered that I had osteoporosis. The worst thing for sciatica is sitting for long apparently, whereas when I have had periods of recuperation and sat a lot it helped my bursitis.

I haven't been riding my recumbent bike much recently because I do so many other exercises so that may also be contributing to my bursitis not being as bad as it had been.

Supposedly physical therapy helps bursitis. I have been through that a couple of times and I guess it did give me some minor relief but it was not a huge help. I am amazed that the exercises I do, mostly aerobic but they entail a lot of jogging in place, that type of thing, seem to have helped.

I just checked YouTube and there are Iliotibial Band Exercises on there too. One is by "Bob and Brad" who are physical therapists and they do suggest good exercises generally. I have not checked them out on this, but I find that they talk too much! I tend to like to get down to business and it takes them forever to do that.

Thank you, JR and Maryflorida, Sometimes you feel like your alone in this, as you know. First I meant to add I have a medical issue that deals with white blood cells. I mass produced them. I use to do give them to open heart and babies. It is Cala ‘Seals’, checked for Leukemia, but know it is just white blood cells gone crazy. I do not have to have them removed, I use to choose to. The blood bank love me.. I do have arthritis, just found the bursitis in my hip, osteoporosis and go to a rheumatologist. I have tried Humira for a year plus, but the side effects stopped me from staying on it. Now the bones have decided to go full force down hill, and the bursitis in my hip was a new addition. My bones will not support a hip replacement. Yesterday I turned my foot and rolled my weight on it, so today I will go down and have it checked. Think I have broken some small foot bones on my bad side! I don’t mean to complain, but it is happening so fast, it is hard to understand. I truly thank you for your help and understanding.... I just don’t know what is happening . And it is happening so fast! ( we do have a “My Chart”, to get information, but I found out, my two Dr., are not on the same “My Chart”. So the information I could not find...... I will call and see what they can do about that Monday! I thought I was going nuts! Thank you for hearing me. I will get back to you. Need to get this foot taken care of. Diana

I was just reading through some of the posts and notice your comment about MyChart. That is a wast of time!!!! Ialso have two MyChart portals and they definitely do not communicate with each other, so I unlinked them. They have wrong information that they do not want to fix. I have no idea where they got it from. I was using it to check my test results, but some have disappeared and then reappeared and then some have not reappeared. It has been nothing but a fight trying to get the right information. I have decided that I am not going to check any of the MyChart entries...it is way too stressful trying to get things right. Some of the Doctors I have never been to nor would have had contact with for example anesthesia etc. Anyway, I go in and request what I need from medical records and print it out. That way you get the whole report. Someone entered my CA 27.29 results for 3 different tests as CA 125. Who needs the stress when you already have enough problems. MyChart is a joke.
