Unknown chest pain: sharp, stabbing, and throbbing.

Help!
Hello! My names Mikayla I am 22 years old and have been having chest pain (sharp,stabbing/throbbing?hard to explain) since this March 2020. I have seen doctors and they have done a ct scan of my lungs finding a nodule on my lung and they sent me to mayo Rochester but they said my pain has nothing to do with my lungs. Then recently I had an endoscopy done and all my results came back normal. I am just now see a cardiologist but they are saying it’s highly unlikely that its my heart causing problems. My chest hurts everyday all the time just in different levels of pain from day to day and nothing triggers it either. Some days it’s a 8/10 and others 3/10 pain level. Im just so tired of dealing with this everyday and not having an answer as to why I’m in so much pain ): or feeling like I could die at any minute. Today I actually for the first time had chest pain and it hurt to breathe (sharp pain under my rib when deep breathing) also my left arm hurt for awhile but I’m not sure if that was from something else. 8 months is just a long time to deal with this and not having a good plan ):

Also I’m just concerned on how my issue could effect me if I were to contract covid. Since I don’t know what’s wrong with me yet I feel like if I were to contract it I would be 100% more miserable since I already have chest pain. I work in health care technically and come in contact with a lot of people everyday and they are mostly older people that come in from nursing homes or they are frequent travelers to the warm states. I’m from Wisconsin but work in Minnesota so cases here are on the rise so I’m just nervous

I just feel like since my doctor has prescribed me adderall and knows I smoke weed is weird since this can happen

Also I don’t smoke as much weed as I used to so I feel like the damage may already be done if it is caused by this, Because my chest hasn’t hurt before while combing the two for a long time and now it suddenly hurts all the time even when I don’t smoke and doesn’t get worse if I do. I don’t know maybe I’m just going crazy at this point dealing with this pain 😂

@mikquack, I strongly recommend that you talk to your prescribing doctor about this potential interaction. Be completely honest about how much weed you smoke (in the past and now) and for how long.

@mikquack Sometimes the aftereffects of a chemical last a long time. You have been dealing with the issues you stated for a while now, and being truthful to yourself and doctors is important! You may find that "coming clean" to yourself and your drs, about what you use and how much/how often, will release some of the anxiety, and you will be able to now deal with it all. You owe it to yourself, you know.

Please let me know what you decide, and how it all goes!

Hi Mikayla - Since corresponding with you, and hearing that the doctors do not actually see lung damage, I wondered about vaping. After reading, I see that all by itself, vaping can cause chest pain, including near the heart, even without any apparent damage to lungs. And the pain can persist for some time after you quit completely. There are many theories about this, but no solid research yet. Because vaping is new, and the variety of chemicals in the cartridges changes all the time, there is very little solid research as to what causes the pain, but there is no doubt that vaping can cause many different medical problems.

I think that, as difficult as it will be, for your own health you NEED to stop all vaping and smoking until the docs figure out what is wrong. Maybe you need some assistance to cut out the nicotine - if you have insurance, they should help with it.

Also, I noticed that you are worried about catching Covid due to your job. Did you know that vaping appears to increase your risk of getting it as well? Here is a link about it: https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2020/08/vaping-linked-to-covid-19-risk-in-teens-and-young-adults.html So quitting vaping/smoking would reduce your risk of Covid and quite possible make you healthier overall.

We are all quite concerned about you - please let us know how things are going.

@mikquack I’m not 22 any longer but I have chest pain like you describe. All my tests also come out negative. A cardiologist told me that it was most probably an esophageal spasm. He said to lie down , try to relax, and take 1-2 Tums. I’m also very careful to note where the pain is, if I get sweaty or nauseous and if the pain radiates anywhere ( all signs of a heart attack). After about a 1/2 hour, I’m okay.
I googled esophageal spasms, and as painful as they are, most are not serious. Ask your doctor if this could be the problem

Yes I have been told this could be a possibility! I’ve had an endoscopy done but I don’t think that checks esophageal spasms? I think that may be one of my nexts steps as I do have an appointment with a gastroenterologist again. I’ve been on tums before because I do suffer from acid reflux but Tums have never helped my chest pain only my acid reflux. I am now on medication for my acid reflux because at first they thought that may be causing my chest pain but the medication is only helping with my acid reflux not chest pain.

UPDATE: my heart ultrasound came back normal which is what I expected honestly and it’s good but puts me in a weird spot right now to figuring stuff out :/ My next step is seeing the gastroenterologist again. I already had a endoscopy done and that was normal.
My mom was wondering if it could be my gallbladder? I sometimes have pain right below my ribs also but my chest pain usually outways that.
I don’t think I’ve said this before but when they did the ct scan in March when I first started having chest pain they did notice a nodule on my lung and 2 doctors said I had one on my lung then Mayo Clinic reviewed it and said nothing was there. Idk I trust mayo but maybe I need another ct scan done just to be sure? This is just getting to be to much for me
